#Braves have designated Jonny Venters for assignment.

Added to #Braves 40-man: Mauricio Cabrera, Williams Perez, Kyle Kubitza, Tyrell Jenkins, Yean Carlos Gil, Brandon Cunniff, Jose Peraza.

It's Peraza or bust in 2015, I suppose.

Not necessarily, they just had to Rule 5 guys to the 40-man roster by November 20th. Peraza may still start the year at AAA. Obviously with all 40 man spots taken, other spots will have to be cleared to add players.

Do you think Peraza is ready, now?

I would honestly rather throw Peraza to the wolves (ala Rafael Furcal) than suffer through any period of time which featured Gosselin as the starting 2B.

It might depend what veteran they can get to bring in for one year. I believe they think Peraza needs to at least start the year at AAA. I would be shocked if Gosselin is the starting 2B, they view him more as better suited for a utility guy.

He will be given the opportunity to prove himself in spring training and win the job then but it will take an extremely impressive spring for that to happen. In my opinion, he isn't and won't be ready at that time and he'll start 2015 in AAA.

It's still wayyy early in the offseason to suspect Peraza is the guy. With that being said, someone like Bonifacio will most likely be signed as a stopgap. Internal options include: Tyler Pastornicky (probably the favorite to be the everyday guy), Phil Gosselin, and Elmer Reyes.

If the Braves want to contend then sure. But I don't think that's the goal this year so that would be wasting a year of service time.

Have they not yet run out of spare ligaments in Venters' body for him to use in his elbow?

Also, other than his torrid start in 2013, Ramiro Pena has been AWFUL. Played the Garret Anderson role pretty well of "looking like you know what you're doing out there on the field and at the plate, but actually being really really terrible".

40-man roster is now full. The front office is going go need to be creative to make things work. For example, including a less useful player like James Russell in a potential Justin Upton trade. Or acquiring prospects that don't need to be placed on the 40-man. There are some AAAA type guys that the Braves could also DFA, but I'm sure they'd like to avoid some of those decisions.

3 guys left off the 40-man who could go in the Rule 5 draft: Cody Martin, JR Graham and Edward Salcedo. Interesting that they chose to protect Williams Perez, Gil and Cunniff over those three. I agree regarding Williams Perez. But I would have protected Martin rather than Cunniff. Gil pitched in low A. Even though he pitched very well that is so far from the majors there was little chance another team would select him and keep him on their 25 man roster all year.

Kubitza was a no brainer. He improved his prospect status a lot this past season. Good chance he eases Johnson out of the third base spot over the next couple years.

I'd send him to AAA for a few weeks to delay free agency by a year. We should have done that with Heyward. Gosselin and Pastornicky look like they'll be our utility infield guys. They can hold down second for a couple weeks.

A couple spots would open up if we non-tender Medlen and Beachy.

If I were him, I wouldn't even begin a throwing regimen till camps start in 2016. He's obviously not going to pitch in 2015 regardless with the surgery so late in the yr.
