Viz and Teheran listed as top trade candidates

Justin Turner for one. He has some injury concerns, but he's been a 4 WAR for the last 2 years and is well on his way to another 4 WAR season this year. And he plays a position of need.

Josh Reddick, Cespedes, Ian Desmond, Bautista... lots of pretty good bats available actually, and nearly all of the quality hitters play a position of need for us.

Would not be against Turner or Desmond. Desmond appeals because hes a bit more versatile?

Mike Zunino has had 2 HR's in 7 Ab' s since being called up after doing well in AAA. Tyler Oneil has been a name mentioned here a few times as well as a power hitting OF prospect. The M's may be a trade partner as they have a need in the rotation, the pen, and at SS. Aybar is not much these days, but we could always eat his contract for this year which makes him a lot more attractive.

My take:

Teheran projects as a 3.5 WAR per season player over the rest of his contract (through 2020 with the option). Or a total of about 16 wins. During that time he will be paid $39M. At the going rate of about 7M/win that works out to about 5.5 wins. So he is a player worth 16 wins being paid a salary worth about 5.5 wins. So his expected surplus value is 10 wins.

There have been various analyses of what a top prospect is worth. Here is one study:

http://www.thepointofpittsburgh.com/mlb-prospect-surplus-values-2016-updated-edition/

It finds that a Top 10 prospect has a surplus value of about 10 wins.

So it appears to me that fair value for Teheran would be a one-for-one trade for someone like Moncada.

Of course, I want to win any trade involving a very valuable asset for Teheran, though I am realistic enough to know that a win of the order of magnitude of the Shelby Miller trade is unlikely. I would be looking for Moncada plus an asset with a surplus value of about 3 WAR. That would be my price in any talks with the Red Sox. There isn't any need to play games with them. Have a bottom line and walk away if they won't meet it.

going rate for wins last offseason was $8m, with the future discount effect, overall price per WAR will be around $9m per win (slightly less but close enough)

I think Reddick makes a lot of sense as he's probably going to be traded and not cost a pick.

Just wish he wasn't LHed with the prototypical 100 OPS platoon split disadvantage vs LHed pitchers. The Braves really need to add an impact RHed bat to pair with Freeman. That's why I would prefer Ces or Desmond, and even Bautista if the price is right (meaning a 2-3 year deal, which probably isn't happening).

Agreed...We have to have a RH bat, but we could sign 2 bats. We could add Cespedes/Desmond/Joey and Reddick.

Another decent option for C is Derek Norris from the Padres. He is nothing special offensively (~.700 OPS guy), but he is in his first year of arbitration next year and has consistently been among the league leaders in framing runs. The Padres will be trying to open a spot for Hedges in the near future, so Norris is probably available.

Cespedes- 5 years $125m (pay him, front load his deal a bit to even out the value) Desmond would be a decent buy here at 4 $72m but I wouldn't want to go over that

Ramos/Castro/Wieters (please not weiters)- Ramos might get re-signed by the Nats but Castro at 3 $36 m wouldn't be a bad pickup

Prado- homecoming... give him 2 year $16m with a team option

$45m AAV to the club, still well within budget, adding 8+ WAR per year for the first 2 years is good value and by the time we have to decide on Prado's option, we will know if Riley or whoever is ready for 3b.

as far as the draft compensation is concerned, who cares? the team kinda needs to send a msg to the casual fanbase that they are going to make the addition needed to win. so, a protected first rd pick makes up for the loss of a 2nd. rounder

I don't see the Braves signing 2 OFers. I think they will keep Markakis, and unless Mallex or Inciarte are used in a trade will go with 5 OFers on the roster: Inciarte, Smith, Markakis, Frenchy, plus one of Ces/Desmond/Bautista/Meyers/Braun/Marte/some other RHed middle of the order bat.

They could potentially add Reddick if they also add someone like Desmond for 3B to pair with Freeman. I personally think they would be better off trading for a SP like Moore and signing the position players, but there are many ways they could go...they have plenty cash and prospects.

Julio Teheran has been scratched from his scheduled start on Wednesday as he's being treated for an infection in his right thigh.
Tyrell Jenkins will get the ball in his place against the Phillies. The Braves are hopeful that he'll be able to return to the rotation and make a start at some point over the weekend in Chicago.

First of all this sounds like B.S.and a way to keep him from getting injured...But even if it's legit, there's no need to rush him back. let him sit and come back after the All Star break

I don't see Frenchy here in 2017.

And why not exactly? He is posting a .787 OPS vs LHers this season, and has a career .782 against them. By all accounts he is an excellent clubhouse guy, and is still a fan favorite. He signed for $1M this year, and will likely make about the same next year. He is essentially the perfect 5th OFer, especially for a club like the Braves who are already LHed dominant in the OF.

If we had a manager who only started him or pinch hit him against lefties I would agree, but we haven't had such luck this year.

After the all star break is when I think a trade will go down if it ever does. Teams dont like to sell before the all star game unless it's trash like Bud Norris. If I am another team and going to give up big talent to get Teheran and Vizcaino then I want them for most of July too. Every day is 1 less game they can help them this season.

This may be out there, but here goes...

Teheran will probably be the Braves lone representative at the AS game. A team may want him now, but trading him now could cause problems with the AS roster since the Braves wouldn't have a representative. This injury may have been cooked up to keep him from pitching until after the AS game when the trade could be announced.

Probably just a silly conspiracy theory, but you never know.

Have final rosters been announced? I think once they have been announced, then it doesn't matter if they trade him. A brave was selected, even though he was traded.

--looks like Friday, the final rosters will be revealed... hmm

who is worth buying nxt yr? One of the many 30+ ok catchers, Freese, and Prado? Huge risk to to put big money into Chapman?

Justin Turner, Desmond, Ramos, maybe Cespedes, Bautista but too old and wants 4-5+ years, Reddick, etc.

Some names.

Maybe we can start by defining terms. What's "fair value" for Teheran? Earlier in the thread I threw out a top 75 overall prospect, a minor league reliever with great numbers while being too old for the league and a C-level prospect with some toolsy upside as my sense of "fair value" for Teheran. Does that seem broadly accurate to most folks?

Considering how cheap his contract is that would be insanely retarded for Coppy to do.

Would have to get back Benedinti or Moncada as a start at the very least or Boston can look elsewhere.

Ranking the top 100 players in MLB right now

20. Julio Teheran, Braves
The prize of the trade deadline is pitching like an ace once again. He's on pace for a sub-3.00 ERA and 227 2/3 innings pitched.

88. Freddie Freeman, Braves
Freeman's played in all but one of the Braves' games this season, and along the way he's batted .292/.375/.516.
