What is Inciarte worth? And is he worth keeping?

It has now been reported on MLBTR about Copo's comment that more teams have enquired about Ender than did about Shelby Miller (which we heard was over 20). While it is far-fetched to think these teams are in any kind of bidding war, it does seem to give credence to the thought that someone would give up the proverbial king's ransom for the outfielder. My feeling is that it has to be amazing beyond any expectation (like Miller) to give up a speedy leadoff hitter who plays world class defense and has five years of control.

So, think extreme but still real. When I did, I came up with something like Sonny Gray and Renato Nunez.

:FrediWut:

Now when you wake up from this pleasant dream you can come up with something actually real. Gray has tremendously more value than Miller by himself.

If we are looking for extreme yet somewhat maybe have a chance of happening I'd probably go Soler, Happ, and Contreras from the Cubs.

Good gosh, man. The A's are not giving us Sonny Gray. And the Cubs are not giving us all 3 of those pieces.

The fact that a ton of teams have called about Inciarte means we should sit back and wait, but it doesn't necessarily mean someone will give us way more than he's worth. It could be that most of those teams are calling because they like him and think they can get him for relatively little.

We should wait until we get an offer that is a clear win for us and helps us in more than one area of need, but we shouldn't wait until someone gives us a stupid offer. We still have to be realistic. And neither Sonny Gray nor Soler/Happ/Contreras is realistic.

Good god man, that's about as realistic as me getting a date with Angelina Jolie.

What about Trout and Simmons for Inciarte/Aybar...

Gray for Inciarte sounds like a fair deal. Gray and Inciarte have the same bWAR (8.9) and very close fWAR (6.9 vs 6.1) over the last 2 seasons. While I think those both overvalue Inciarte a bit, he's also younger and has an extra year of team control attached. Plus he doesn't have the inherent risk of being a pitcher.

Ender has a lot of value, that value is no where near Sonny.

As much as I think he is the exact type of player the Braves should be looking to acquire during a rebuild (young, proven at the MLB level, under team control for 5 years, average/above average MLB player), I think he ends up being traded.

There are so many teams out there that are ready to compete right now (and frankly, teams looking at Ender don't have to be ready now) that could use a CF like Ender.

I think he ends up with either the Giants or the Cubs.

Yeah, to put a Sonny Gray trade in context, I saw his name mentioned frequently when writers were discussing the kind of SP that Arizona should have been able to get for what they gave us in the Miller deal.

I think a lot of baseball people felt Inciarte + Blair would've been fair value for Miller. If that's true, you're definitely not getting Sonny Gray with Inciarte alone, but Inciarte + Blair = Miller is probably a good place to start when trying to value Inciarte.

Listed with teams likely to have varying levels of interest...

Mutts - Wheeler
Cubs - Contreras or Jimenez and Candelario
Gnats - don't really have enough to get him with players they'll move.
Tigers - not enough to get him.
Royals - Kyle Zimmer
Angels - not enough to get him.
Padres - Hunter Renfroe and Austin Hedges
Giants - Tyler Beede and Mac Williamson
Rangers - Lewis Brinson and Travis Demeritte
Orioles - Jomar Reyes and Chance Sisco

That's 10 teams - I'd have an awfully tough time coming up with 10 others that would have "serious" interest without having to move another OF before they could justify giving up much for him. Maybe the Yankees if they were able to move Gardner (Gary Sanchez), maybe the Reds (Tyler Stephenson), maybe the Dodgers if they moved Pederson in a package for Sonny Gray or Jose Fernandez.

If 7 other teams have "called", they're likely just doing their due diligence or window shopping.

I'm thrilled to have Inciarte but I'm shocked with the value being thrown around. Not necessarily on this board. But I just think we need to spin him. Swanson and Blair were the centerpieces in the deal in my mind and I think Inciarte is at his absolute peak value right now. We're desperate for a long term middle of the order RH bat. If we can find the right deal I jump on it in a heartbeat.

I know we like Inciarte but we need to relax with his value. No world exists that you can get Sonny Gray for him

If we are not going to be competitive in 2016 and 2017, we have to discount the surplus value of guys like Inciarte, Freeman and Teheran in those years. Which means they are of more value to a team that will not be punting in those years. To some extent, the call on whether to empty out the cupboard turns on whether the FO believes 2017 is also a lost year.

But it was helluva way to jump start this thread, no? But I figure if the A's would trade Josh Donaldson, they'd trade anybody.

Gray is my favorite pitcher in baseball currently. Would love to have him on the Braves.

LOL at the Gray/Cubs offers.

If a team offers a good deal, yeah fine but i wouldnt trade him just to trade him.

I really hope we don't trade him. He is exactly what this team needs, pretty darn good offensively, excellent defensively, speed on the base paths, and under team control for 5 years. Add to that since he won't produce a lot of homers, his arby numbers should be relatively low.

There are several areas he could--and likely will--improve on his 2015 season. I actually don't see him at his peak value right now. Next year or at the deadline might be a better time to test the trade waters. I hope we keep him.
