Lord of the Rings is 9 hours of amazing movies. The Godfather series can't make a claim to that. As time goes by, LOTR gets more and more impressive.
They did a really good job with them, and they hold up pretty well too.

LOTR is a fairly niche fanbase. I mean it's got a huge following, but it's more akin to Star Wars than something like The Godfather.

I see what you’re saying. I wouldn’t call it niche but I agree LOTR is under-appreciated because it’s a genre film with big budget special effects. There’s a tendency to withhold the prestige label though I think this is bias has diminished quite a bit in recent years. I think there’s a good chance is the movie this trilogy is what is remembered most from this era.
History of Violence was great
It's also acted the **** out. Viggo Mortensen is an all-timer. He didn't get the respect he deserved then and I still think he's underappreciated, got to be in the top x percent of actors who've never won an academy award.
The 3 films had a 3 billion dollar box office. The hobbit trilogy also pulled nearly 3 billion. Wouldn't call it a niche fanbase.
Godfather is not as big as you make it out to be it's gotten legendary status more than it being a truly hugely watched film.
Avengers franchise made billions in the box office too. Is that the criteria we're basing this on now?
I like LOTR a lot. But it's niche. It's a fantasy film with elves and dwarves and dragons.
And a mob movie set in NYC/NJ isn't niche either? Every film has a level of nicheness to it.

Return of the King is tied for the most Academy Awards won by a movie with 11. It wasn't just a commercial success, it was a critical success too.
If you call The Lord of the Rings a niche, genre film because it's fantasy then you'd have to call The Godfather a niche, gangster film. Sometimes films transcend their genres. That was the case with both LOTR and The Godfather.
Not really, no.
It's certainly far less niche than a fantasy movie about dragons and wizards and elves.
What Dragon was in Lord of the Rings? Elves and WIzards were mostly washed over. The film is a film at it's core. A hardcore Tolkienfan would deride the film for it not staying true to the books.
You're right it's fantasy, but of it's era, fantasy films were quite popular, Harry Potter, Hunger Games (guess that may be more sci-fi) Twilight, Avatar, Pirates of the Caribbean, etc,
Top 10 global box office biggest films of the 00 decade were basically all live action fantasy except for the Dark Knight and Shrek 2, which shrek is animated fantasy.
If I had to explain to someone with no knowledge the 2 films, do you think they'd struggle? No. Because they're at their core thematic films. Lord of the Rings is a simple good vs. evil with a strong core of characters. Godfather is a movie about family with a strong core of characters.
Fellbeast is basically a dragon

This ^ is, for all intents and purposes, a fuggin dragon to 95% of the movie viewing world. I don't care if it's technically not a dragon. Although technically it also isn't not a dragon, as to my limited knowledge their origins aren't super touched on,. But I am not a Tolkien nerd, so maybe I'm wrong. Google suggests no none else knows exactly what they are either.
You also ignore the fact that it takes place in a fantasy world where dragons are indeed real.
I really hope if that's the case they simplify the names. I have played 200 hours in that game and I mean Marika, Melina, Miquella, Melenia, Maliketh, Margit, Morgott, Milicent, Mohg, Godefroy, Godfrey, Godrick, Godwyn, Rellana, Rennala, Rodrick, Rickard, Radagon, Ranni. Like I legit forget who's who all the time. Like just pick a few of the Demigods and go with different names.
