Winter Meetings Thread

The Quintana derby will be an interesting one. Sometimes when you have a guy like Sale that you're trying to trade, someone like Quintana will end up getting undervalued in the market. If I were the White Sox I'd be very, very picky with Quintana. They need to stick to the price they want and wait to get it.

Here we go again

I stay away. Quintana is a very very good pitcher but with his contractual control he's going to have a crazy high asking price. I'm for getting a guy like Archer but not paying the same price for Quintana.

Plus, the White Sox have "tasted blood" now. They're going to dictate a price higher than we or anyone else ought to pay (especially us) and they're going to hold out until they get it. So, yeah I'm in the "let's just walk away" group. Let's see what our guys can do before we do anything rash. Barring injury I can't see any of our prospects not likely being more valuable this time next year than they are now and who knows, there may be an ace or two from our group who may emerge if given the chance. After all, every single one of those aces or TOR pitchers wasn't always such.

Seems like this is the leader in the clubhouse for worst FA signing so far this offseason. Your paying $70m and the 11th pick in the June draft for Desmond's age 32 - 36 seasons so that he can play some combination of 1B and OF. And this is happening in a market that is flush with available 1B and OF options.

Once this corner OF market shakes out, I'll be curious to see who the Braves could have signed as a non-QO free agent and how that compares to their "signing" of Matt Kemp to a 3 / $25.5m deal.

My thoughts exactly. A baffling move indeed.

My thoughts exactly again! They could have gotten Kemp's offense either cheaper or with better defense for the same money.

Some recent #11 picks: Scherzer, G. Springer, A. Russell, McCutchen. But plenty of busts too.

That is a good deal, but Ramos may miss half of 2017 (or DH a large part of it).

Wellington Castillo is an awful defender that is boosted offensively from playing in Arizona. I'm not sure I would touch him.

He's an awful defender with a +7 DRS? He showed plenty of offensive flashes in Chicago also and is only 29... he also throws out a decent number of runners. Don't know about his framing, but he's certainly not an awful defender at all. 2015 wasn't a great year with a -5 DRS but that was his only negative year and appears to be an outlier.

I wouldn't be opposed to a 4-man bench. The versatility of some of our positional players makes this possible. Also allows Mallex and Ruiz to play everyday at AAA versus once or twice a week.
