With the new NFL season upon us let's play rename the Washington Redskins

The problem, for Democrats, is that the 'poor' (and by natural extension, those who qualify for government benefits) don't generally vote. This is something they have been working on since 2008 though, and we could see a change in that perception in just a few short months.

Democrats now run on "helping" the poor by extending benefits. You don't have to keep these recipients politically conscious for longer than 2 months. Its doable and that is what they are doing.

Not when it comes off of the backs of the rest of America.

You want to give me a gift out of the kindness of your heart? I'm all game!

Sure, but it came off of my American back. I think it's infected.

So now we have non Native Americans telling us how Native Americans "really feel" about the subject and how the name Redskins isn't derogatory and hurtful to Native Americans. Wow

You do know what anyone worth a damn intelligently would recognize both. I'm guessing growing up you only read about the redskins, never saw their logo in association with photos, or TV broadcasts. Or did you just think logos were totally unrelated to the team names. And the fact that the Eagles had an Eagle, was just coincidence?

We grew up with it so it never occurred to us that it was offensive. I didn't even know it was considered racist until I was like 18 because I never spent a second thinking about it.

My only problem is the uproar from the people who get offended professionally. If Native American's come out and say they'd like the team name changed because they find it offensive, then that's one thing. But it's just a bunch of whiny crybabies who are calling for it. If a Native American says they don't care if someone calls them a Redskin and some whiny ass white person stands there and says it doesn't matter because it offends them personally....well who really gives a ****? It's not directed at them. It has nothing to do with them. So they need to mind their own damn business.

So many damn white knights in this country who spend their time meddling in affairs that don't even concern them.

Well we certainly don't hear many of them saying the name is derogatory.

There you go, you said it well. No one even considered it racist till white folk go on their liberal soapbox.

Well there aren't many of them to begin with (barely 1% of the US population) and more than 1/4 of Native Americans live at or near poverty levels. So getting a good judge on how most Native Americans feelprobably pretty difficult.

Regardless, there is PLENTY of Native American support behind getting the name removed. I think the better question is Why/how does it affect non-Native Americans if the name is changed? Is it really going to affect you that much if the name is changed to the Washington Warriors or the Washington Redtails?

Carp, if the minority complains and wants the Redskins changed, you'll have to change the Braves, Indians, fighting Irish, etc. changing one teams name opens a can of worms for every other sports team

Not really. Redskins is a derogatory word, regardless of what it used to be 200 yrs ago or what it was intended for when the owner changed the name 70 yrs ago. In 2014, Redskin is a derogatory word.

Then why is there a high school on a Navajo reservation with a 99% NA student body calling itself the Redskins?!?

I don't know, but I could see how "owning" a potentially derogatory term might be a point of pride for a 99% NA student body. As with many potentially negative slurs, context is everything.

I'm constantly hearing how I'm a white guy and I'll "never understand" what it's like to be black, or NA, or a woman, or purple, etc.

Let me just say as a white guy to any group that considers itself discriminated against in any way - if you tell me how terribly offended you are to be referred to as "X," then you turn around and call yourselves "X," your claims lose some of their legitimacy in my eyes. If you think I'm wrong, all I can tell you is I guess you'll just "never understand."

Honestly if it makes 10% of the natives feel bad, then that's too much. As a culture so many have lost their identity, so for them being called Redskin may mean nothing to them anymore because their culture's been murdered.

I think Jason Taylor put it well

"Look, it’s offensive. If you look it up in the dictionary, it’s an offensive term. And I think if you get one segment of people that are offended by it, it warrants some looking at. "

Jon Richie also had some good points in there.

"“I grew up in Central Pennsylvania when the Redskins were good,” Ritchie continued. “They were close; I was a fan. I was a fan of the guys on that team. The name didn’t matter to me, but the guys, like John Riggins, and the Fun Bunch with Art Monk, and Dexter Manley: that’s what mattered. The personalities on the team are what matters. Daniel Snyder should know that. The name does not matter. But the name does matter to some people in our society, because it is a nod to the decimation of a tradition and a culture that was once prevalent here in the United States. If it offends anyone, the name should be out.”"

Of course you're gonna say they aren't natives so who GAF.

Lastly I'll link you to a wikipedia page about NA tribes who're opposed to the name.

A white person calling a black person the N word has a whole different context than the use of it by other black people to each other.

I mean **** you can take a word and tweak it's context and not be offensive to being offensive.

(this is an exercise no one take offense) if I was to say "thethe is a Jew" when asked about his religion that's totally different then saying "thethe is a Jew" when someone tells me a story about him not tipping.

No it doesn't

This isn't a slippery slope argument
