You've been hired as GM

A contender probably doesn't have interest in taking a flier on a minor league option. At very least with Johnson you know exactly what kind of production you are plugging in as a floor, and as loathe as some are to admit, there's still a ceiling of some sort. He's serviceable complimentary piece.

Who else is available via trade? Aramis Ramirez? He wouldn't be cheap to acquire.

How many teams have such dire 3B options that Chris Johnson would be considered an upgrade? Is Prado available? McGehee? Uribe? Dietrich? Middlebrooks?

This is obviously purely hypothetical, but Cleveland could, or other AL teams that might be able use Johnson at 3B to spell their starter (NYY) ... others if there were to be an injury.

McGehee just signed with the Marlins, although they could (and probably should) move Prado. And I'd take Johnson over Middlebrooks and Dietrich assuming the Braves pay a considerable portion of his contract.

Cleveland is out of the playoff race, no?

I would certainly take Middlebrooks over CJ. He's paid nothing, can field, and has a little bit of pop at least.

They are only 5.5 out of the Wild Card, but yeah, I wouldn't put money on it.

I've always liked Middlebrooks but that .215/.242/.367 is putrid. CJ is negligibly better offensively, in a part time role -- but then Petco factor. Middlebrooks appears to be the clearly better defender.

And I could see it being a possibility that someone trades for CJ, I'm just trying to think of a team dumb enough to do so.

CJ has value for a team who has issues hitting LHP and especially that issue at 3B or 1B. He hits LHP really well. As Hawk said we'll have to eat a chunk of change or include someone else. I like the idea of Johnson and Grilli to a team. They're getting Grilli for free because of taking on Johnson's salary. Or trading Johnson to a team as a way of them not sending back money.

Crazy idea...but I would put Simmons on the block in the right deal. I would be willing to slide Peterson to short it is his natural position anyway and I would be willing to gamble that Peterson turns out to be better offensively than Simmons. I would not mind giving up defense for a little more consistent offense. All I ask is a player make the plays he is supposed to make so while Simmons is fun to watch, I think it may be better long term for us to move him and get that LF'er, 3B, or catcher we desperately need. But it would have to be a guy that could fill one of those spots for the next five to ten years.

Isn't peraza a ss, but moved bc of Simmons?

When you look at the 2015/16 FA class for 3B the extension makes more sense than anybody is willing to give credit for. Chris Johnson at $7.55MM is leaps and bounds better than any of the alternatives. That's not saying much, but that's saying something.

I'm confident the Braves will be able to move him eventually.

Has kinda been my thought all along. That doesn't make it much better, but my question always was - "who else were you going to get that cost less???"

I think so. Point is right now SS is pretty deep. Really our only position player spot you can say that about. Simmons, Jace, Jose, and Albies. I don't have much faith in Simmons offensively. He is probably going to get better but its not a certainty. His peak trade value may turn out to be now.

Peterson should be a better hitter than Simmons.

Don't know that I'd openly put Simba "on the block", but have said for some time that I'd have some slightly cryptic way of telling GMs that come calling on Peraza that I haven't made ANYBODY untouchable and that I do have the flexibility of moving one of the younger guys over if I need to.

If I were dealing with someone I felt comfortable wouldn't leak the info too soon for me to be able to prepare Andrelton that rumors were going to be floating about because "other teams had asked about dealing for him", I might even try to get talks to a somewhat advanced stage. I don't know if Hart feels he could get far enough down the road with them, but one hypothetical I tossed out earlier was...

Say you can keep the fact that you're talking to the Rockies quiet long enough to find out if they'd eat some of his money if you were willing to part with Simba and Wood that the only thing left is for Colorado to ask Tulo to waive his no-trade rights and agree to move to 3B in Atlanta. Would you be willing to pull the trigger? Might you even do it if they didn't pay any of the freight on Tulo's contract? You'd then plug Peraza in at SS, and any lack of range towards the hole you have with Simba going to his right compared to Jose should be offset by Tulo's SS range at 3B. You could then consider moving Maybin to RF and Markakis to LF and then spend the rest of the money you have available on Price.

2B- Peterson, RF- Maybin, 1B- Freeman, 3B- Tulo, LF- Markakis, SS- Peraza, CF- Smith, C- Bethancourt/Veteran

Price, Miller, Teheran, Banuelos, Wisler

In that scenario, I'd think Maybin and Peraza are somewhat interchangeable - give Jose time to get his feet wet in the lower part of the order until he's comfortable (like they did with Peterson for a bit), then swap them so you'd have Maybin's pop in more RBI situations.

Schwarber would be a hell of a return for Miller. I would do that trade in a heartbeat. Then I would sign Price to make up for the loss at pitching.

I don't think the Cubs would even consider giving up Schwarber for Miller. A catcher like him has extremely high value.
