Braves trade for Chris Sale - Grissom going to Red Sox (Extension through 26 at 18M)

The Kelenic and Sale acquisitions are riskier than I would have liked a couple months ago, but there is no denying the potential upside of these guys. It’s going to look pretty bad if Kelenic turns into a $25M bust and Sale pitches 11 innings while Grissom posts 3 wins as a rookie (don’t look at the season Contreras just had), but if luck swings the other way and Kelenic turns into LHH Riley and Sale wins 4 games in October, these deals will be looked back upon as pure genius.

My point is that he won't be healthy in October ya dick head. Go paint a George Floyd mural or militate on behalf of minorities without jeopardizing your own privileges. Fck face.

We’re paying 500k for him and all we gave up was a utility infielder who can’t field. If by “joke of a trade” you mean one of those rare ones with little to know downside and all the upside, then you’re absolutely correct.

One of the problems with most of the guys available was that they didn't really move the needle for the playoffs. Sale gives you a shot at moving that needle. Regardless 9f whether this deal works, AA is a freaking genius for making it, and the best GM in the game.

Needles!?

It’s been outlined already, what are you missing?

I’m unconcerned with a 3 that will pitch a bunch of innings in the regular season. I want a guy who can impact games big time in October. Sale fits that bill. Pretty simple.

Bold of you to assume Sale will make it to October healthy. If we did the smart thing and start him up around the all star break maybe he makes it but I doubt Sale would be okay with that. The odds of Sale starting and ending the year healthy are not good. Significantly worse than Morton.

Which is my position, yes...The money and give away was more than ideal...but I don't think we should expect to count on him to be available in October. I like the risk but I was hoping for something more sure fire to impact the rotation.

This is the first time I have really looked into how good Sale has been. He is basically Randy Johnson with injury issues.

Sale had a great peak but he hasn't been that level since 2018. Maybe he drinks the magic cola water in Atlanta that seems to have magically revived a few pitchers over the years and returns to form but he has not been RJ level in a long time.

Every single pitcher is one pitch, one step to first, one line drive away from being out for the season. You can’t just say start him at the all star break and think your odds are better.

Both Morton and Sale need to be sat and told:
1. You will never see pitch 100 again
2. You will be IL’d at the quarter pole and 3 quarter pole at bare minimum
3. You will only throw at 80% velocity the entire season. Save the max effort for Oct
4. You might be bumped out one more night so a young guy gets a chance to start
5. Tell twitner you prefer Murphy as your catcher and you won’t take the mound unless he is back there.

Maybe Strider and Fried gets that talking too as well.

Besides the fact that they're veteran pitchers, not idiots, and have been around the block of a 162-game season a few times, No. 3 is begging for an injury to happen.

Trading Grissom to get a legitimate starter for 500k is a great move regardless of how it works out.

Anthopolous is only going to make deals on his own terms and I'm a fan.

Can someone help me understand the logic being applied by the “sale won’t make it to October” contingent?

Do they think a pitcher must start the season, and if he is injured in any way is then unavailable for the remainder of the season?

Do they think there is no way to limit workload during the season to improve the odds of being healthy in October?

Do they think a player can’t get injured early in the season, sit for 2 months, and then be ready for October?

Do they not think the human body can heal in any months other than the winter?

Can someone please help me understand this point of view?

Well, they remember that Soroka and Wright didn’t make it back last year. So it will therefore never happen again…😉

The best way to manage all of our starters is to not consistently pitch them deep into games and to give them extra off days throughout the year. Sale needs to throw no more than 150 innings ideally. But considering the clause in his contract about Cy Young finishes, it may be difficult to manage that without creating a stink with the MLBPA.
