Official 2024 Off-Season Thread!

Fortunately the FA market year is flooded with SP's next year, so AA should have plenty of options to choose from.

Next year is probably the time AA will be forced to sign a bad contact for a SP. The closing of the window is in sight, and giving a SP an ill-advised 6 year deal is probably going to slam it shut 4-5 years from now. But he may have to do it to keep the window wide open for the next few years.

Based on what the Mets, Phils, Nats and Marlins have done so far this offseason to rebuild I think the window may be open for a long time. The next two drafts and international signing periods will determine how long the Braves are a playoff team. Don’t forget to be a playoff team you only have the be better than 4 teams not 29. Right now I don’t see any NL east team being a great team in 5 years.

Rosenthal said on his podcast today that Fried is definitely gone in the free agency. Obviously, that's speculation, but I suspect he's right.

Could have said the same thing about Philly and Nola. I think a lot depends on the type of year Fried has. I think he will give us a chance to at least be close to the top offer. If he has a career year then we can kiss him goodbye. One of the dumb teams like the Yankees will pay him like he will keep that up for the next 10 years.

I was willing to give him the benefit of the doubt when the original story broke. IIRC, I think they said he was 17 when the relationship started and she was 13. A 4 year age difference didn't seem that unreasonable. And then add on top of that the cultural differences.

But the more girls that keep coming forward and the more information that comes out, the more it shows just how horrific the situation actually is.

He's gone to the west coast dude. If LA doesn't offer the moon, then it will be San Fran.

I'm thinking Zack Wheeler is a target next offseason. He'll be 34 and maybe comes cheaper (or a shorter deal) than some of the bigger names because of his age. Georgia guy, maybe wants to close his career in Atlanta if the money is similar.

Really not comparable. Seems Nola always wanted to remain a Philly… it is well known that Fried would like to be back on the west coast. It ain’t happening man.

Is it well known, or just well speculated? I’m not even denying the likelihood it’s true, I just can’t remember any verifiable reporting, and certainly he’s never been quoted as saying that.

Fried not extending when the whole team effectively has makes me think the writing is on the wall.

Fried is going to where he gets the best deal. Probably not Atlanta. But to whoever pays him the best.

Yeah, probably, and maybe the pull of SoCal is on his mind. However, the Angels are awful and 40 tough miles from Pacific Palisades, and the Dodgers have just invested a billion-two on Glasnow, Yamamoto and Ohtani. The Padres owner died and they've been trimming payroll significantly and found a niche with undermarket Asians. The A's are a non-factor. The Giants will be there with their wallet open, but the Bay area isn't home.

A bunch of the Braves' salary comes off and a lot of the acquisition cost of the four gambles will be dissipated by next year, so we'll be free to buy a starter next year. Wheeler's availability and likely relative short-term requirement will be attractive at his age, but for me, Fried for five years would be the prize. He doesn't have many miles for his age. That's a double edged sword, because he has had a number of injuries, but most of it seems...manageable. And there's so much risk with any pitcher. I think he's head and shoulders above the rest, and I'd be inclined to pay close to full retail for this one guy.

Okay… fair… well speculated… I’m really good at going overboard on absolutes when it comes to message boards
