GDT #19 4/21/14: Marlins (Koehler) @ Braves (Teheran), 7:10

We're a few weeks into the first season of this guy catching full-time in the Major Leagues. Our pitching staff has the best ERA in baseball. People will find anything to bitch about.

Yep which is exactly why I am done. I won't be posting here anymore. Keith knows why.

:Gasp:

Bc Gattis isn't terrible at throwing out runners, which essentially is what they measure.

I think DRS does more than that - at least according to their site:

“…as I understand it, the numbers determines (using film study and computer comparisons) how many more or fewer successful plays a defensive player will make than league average. For instance, if a shortstop makes a play that only 24% of shortstops make, he will get .76 of a point (1 full point minus .24). If a shortstop BLOWS a play that 82% of shortstops make, then you subtract .82 of a point. And at the end, you add it all up and get a plus/minus.” (Joe Posnanski, Sports Illustrated)

You are talking about a catcher though.

With such a small sample wouldn't you look more to his career numbers?

He has approximately a 950 OPS currently this year. Is that what hitter he is?

Yes, esp. since it could flip back to above 30% tonight with a CS, just as the stolen base flipped it to 29% last night. Plus I'd also consider what the rest of the league is doing too. But either way it's not like Mac was so good at throwing out runners. Mac has only threw out 24% for his career (same pct. he threw out last year with us). This year Mac is at 25% so far. Of course Mac is one of the best pitch framers in the game (as is David Ross another former Brave). But as you noted, Gattis was a good pitch framer last year himself. While Laird and Doumit are terrible at it (among the worst in MLB). Doumit has been the worst many times in fact.

Which reminds me, there was an article on ESPN site this past off-season noting that the pitchers had a really great ERA in Gattis starts at catcher last year. This year so far it's even better, amazing even so far. I think it's about time he starts getting more credit here.

Yeah, thats the only explanation I got for DRS on fangraphs. I think using a shortstop is an example. I'd imagine the same principle applies for all positions.

There is no way to accurately account for catchers defense. pitch framing, errors/passed balls, and stolen bases are indicators, but really don't tell the whole story.

Its probably because the hitters are afraid of being eaten by El Oso Blanco.

You are probably right. I just don't see this argument that Gattis is a bad catcher. Heck, I see at worst an average catcher and one that hits for ridiculous amounts of power.

His career numbers are a small sample.

I'm not worried about him throwing though. He did well in the minors.

What would you guys need to see to justify giving Gattis a 5 year deal past this year? THat would bring him to age 33 I believe.

I'd play it out year by year.

I wouldnt extend him personally.
