Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

Common knowledge.

Common misconception, actually. He was a truly terrible hitter in 2023, and a truly excellent hitter in 2024. Before those two seasons, he was mostly an average to above-average hitter (pre-2024 career-high wrc+ was 113). Solid numbers, with defensive flexibility; less so if he’s an average, at best, LF.

I still don’t want to see the Braves sign him to something like the 3/$45m that’s been projected (and certainly not anything richer/longer than that); and I think it’s more likely he’s a 110 wrc+ hitter than the monster he was last season; and I assume he’s relegated to LF at this point. Nevertheless, “terrible hitter for his career” isn’t really correct (though he’s also had a weird Giants-style “better in even years” pattern to his value).

It is super weird that we are this far into the off-season and AA hasn't made even a semi-major move, even for a reliever to replace Jiminez. And we haven't even been connected to really anyone, aside from a passing mention as 1 of 5 finalist for Crochett.

Certainly makes it feel like we are trying to reset the luxury tax. Which is fine. But we still have money to spend and holes to fill (please no jokes about Cy's mom).

Boy all this talk about Arraez but he's projected for what, 14M next year? Ouch. Thats a lot of scratch for a no power, or defense player.

yeah.. he should be free basically.. I would peg him as a 2 win player for 1 year. and at ~15 million.. that should be a lottery type prospect at the most. Putting him in LF would probably make him closer to zero wins as I think LF gets dinged more than 2nd base in WAR calcs... (could be wrong).

Anyone wanting Arraez is clueless. It is now understood empty BA guys like him aren't actually valuable because it's not the 1980s anymore.

Cease makes just as much sense now as he always has, but folks reminding us that he is unlikely to sign an extension are 100% correct.

Profar only makes sense because he's an actual MLB player at a position of need, and the Braves don't have actual MLB players at that position. It's not like anyone is excited at the idea of Profar in LF, but at this point any actual MLB player is better than what's currently on the roster...which is nothing.

The interesting thing about Profar is he significantly increased his average exit velocity from his usual 87 mph to 91 last year, and did so without sacrificing any contact or plate discipline. If "swinging harder" really did turn him into a legit .350+ xwOBA bat, then suddenly he's a much better option in LF and becomes mildly exciting to follow as a player.

Arraez is projected at 2.5 fWAR with it being dragged down by his defense. If he can play LF, he'd be a great get. Him getting on base in front of Acuna, Riley, and Olson would be great. This lineup doesn't need any more power.

His zips projection (2.5) has -12 def value already factored in. Going yo lf might actually help it.

right his -12 def value would be less in LF, which is why he would get a ding on his WAR projection. Infield usually start with a positive Dwar because it is a harder position to play.. Sans 1b.

Is there any reason to think Arraez can capably play left field? He's played 48 games there in his career, none since he was in his early 20's in Minnesota. Isn't he painfully slow?

That's the question. If he can't play passable LF, then yeah, he's no option at all.

Someone that immediately came to mind who made the switch was Alfonso Soriano. His last 2 years at 2nd he was at -10 and -26 DRS. A switch to left and he was +18 and +17 the next two seasons.

yeah.. LF will get you a bump for sure. I don't think he is a great comp for Luis though.. But then I can't find Alfonso's sprint speed nor arm strength. So maybe he would be better than my description above.
