Offseason Hot Stove 2024-25 Thread

I'm about to cut AA's tallywacker off if he doesn't stop being lazy as hell lmao go get your last piece or two and move on.

Per @JonHeyman the Mets are in talks with the San Diego Padres in regard to SP Dylan Cease.

Brandon Sproat, Jett Williams, and Luisangel Acuna were all listed as potential package names.

What would be the equivalent for us?

I mean I get the Mets are in win now mode and their rotation is jacked, but if even 2 of those players were involved, that would be a significant overpay for 1 year of Cease.

I'll puke if the Mets get Cease.

I would be willing to bet the Pads trade both King and Cease. So still a decent shot we land one of them. With King already having experience playing in NY, you would think Cease to the Braves and King to the Mets would be the moves that make the most sense.

It also wasn’t just the Braves. The pick was universally praised as a homerun at first with many saying he had the best pitch in the draft

I am a Florida grad, and I did not share that view. I put a heavy premium on command, and the guy couldn't find home plate with a shovel and a flashlight. He walked 5 per 9 with a 4.50 ERA. The Fangraphs writer ignored the WS game when he got rocked but his teammates papered it over with 24 runs. I do care about spin rates, but not if you have no idea where it's going. And he's not going to develop command now, he was 22 last year and walked 5 per 9. He cannot throw strikes and that's the end of that.

Somebody needs to quantify command with a metric and list it next to spin rates and movement. We're missing the biggest piece of the puzzle.

I still think dude can be a dominant late-inning reliever, but the floor seems to be closing rapidly around his future as a starter.

I do as well and with Jimenez out and Iglesias old with 1 year left the time is now for this. I know people hate moving starters to the pen but if he is a premium reliever that saves us a lot of money we can spend elsewhere.

Stripers Report just said according to his sources the Braves talks on Cease have “intensified” and some progress has been made toward a deal. He said King’s name has come up but Cease is the #1 target. I have no idea how credible that is but I think he’s had some legit info before so take that for whatever it’s worth (or not).

Give me King and likely extension. Less mileage

He's OK. He called Hyers with contract specifics a day before the Braves released them, but he's mainly minor-league news. My best guess is that he works for the Stripers and is just regurgitating stuff that he hears, even if it's not accurate.

But that's the thing... his spin rates suck... so the one elite thing he was supposed to do, he didn't even do when he got into our organization. Control was always supposed to be his weakness but the split was called the best pitch in the draft by several writers... and it is apparent that it is mediocre as well.

I think there would be a pretty good chance of signing King after a trade. He's coming into his 2nd year as a starter so he probably wants to cash in just in case his 2nd year doesn't go so well. If the Braves and Padres are still talking then they can work something out on players involved, the big hold up would be Boras and AA wanting an extension.

I much prefer Cease, but King screams Braves to me. Mainly due to him being an extension candidate and he's the classic reliever to starter that AA loves. Cease seems like a Met if he goes anywhere (they have a better system, a clear need and money to extend him), though I think only one is traded.

Eh, that's debatable, at the top of both of systems anyways. Mets have a deeper farm, but this isn't a Crochet type of deal we're looking at. A Cease trade is likely to only include 1 Top 100 prospect, 1 mid tier prospect, and trade fodder.

Braves have rushed some guys through the system. It has worked with some guys (Strider and, to some extent, Harris) and hasn't worked (at least to this point) with other guys (Smith-Shawver and Waldrep). I think it's too early for the jury to finish deliberations on the guys who came up before they were fully ready.
