2025 Spring Training Thread

No one wants Anderson. Just DFA and move on. He might even clear and you can stash him in tripA

This. Anderson has basically negative value at this point. He never had good stuff and the stuff he once had has eroded. He needs to stop being talked about as a legitimate option. He's minor league filler at this point, nothing more.

They'd have to eat money to keep us under the tax bc AA won't go over it at this point. I wonder if Anderson would interest the Padres? He's cheap and could be controllable a couple of more years so he could be a piece they could want back.

We still have a decent amount before we go over the tax.

There are a lot of different reasons to trade, or trade for a player. To say Ian has no value is wrong, even if that value is facilitating a trade that someone wants to make, but has so far been unwilling.

He may not have value to a contending team, but there are teams for whom he would have value. Finding the right deal is tricky, but not impossible.

I am sure our farm teams the Royals and Nats would trade for him. If they traded for Kyle Wright with his bad shoulder they would certainly want Ian Anderson.

Holmes has looked a little less effective to me this Spring than he was late last year, but still solid. With 3 to 4 usable pitches at the MLB level, I've got no real concerns with him meeting expectations as a backend starter.

I have heard good things about Holmes this spring. I don't think people fully appreciate how big it is for the team if he can just be a league average starter in the 5th spot in the rotation for league minimum. And we got him for 2 more pre arb years AFTER this one.

So they are really going to go through the charade of stretching Anderson out as if he’s a real option for the rotation. At least they are sticking to their decision.

Any team that would trade for Anderson should fire their GM immediately. Guys of Anderson's quality are literally always available as waiver claims, free agents, or available for cash considerations.

Where are these 26 year olds top ten draft picks with a career ERA under 4 we can get on the scrap heap. Anderson isn't the hill I am willing to die on but he isn't as bad as people here make him out to be.

This is the homerist take on Anderson by any homer who ever homered.

Never mind his last decent season was back in 2021, he’s a former top pick!

Never mind everyone in the sport considered him a reach when he was drafted.

Never mind he had a 5 ERA in his last MLB season, his career ERA is 3.97…technically under 4!!

Never mind his mediocre stuff was deteriorated due to injury, he was a top pick!!

Derrrrrp.

And his FIP, xFIP, and xERA were consistent his last 2 years around 4.25. I know that's probably not the advanced stat that was invented two weeks ago that all the young kids are using but it's what's available on fangraphs. I don't see any reason he can't get back to his previous level. He is 26 and this was his first TJ. It has like a 95% recovery rate to prior level or better. If he can just put up a 4.50 ERA that should be good for a 5th spot in the rotation.

My confidence is in the Braves staff. If they thought there was no chance for him to be a useful member of the rotation he would already be gone. After the success of Sale, Lopez and Schwellenbach I am giving the benefit of the doubt to tobthe Braces scouting and development.

Name a pitcher with bad stuff and command who is decent. Thats who Anderson is right now.

Wouldn’t worry about folks who think Anderson is a MLB starter. It happened with Allard as well. When Ian is DFA’d or traded for pre chewed gum, they will just pretend they knew he stunk all along. If he surprises us and somehow gets actual major league hitters out with a low 90’s FB that doesn’t move and no command. Then I will declare to the heavens I was wrong.

Well we got Chris Martin for Allard who ended up being a pretty useful piece for us.

It’s time for the season to start.

You guys are already attacking each other before any roster decisions are made.

A lot of water still to go under the bridge before we should be this testy;-)

Nah. I love everyone here. It is alright to call your friend a dummy sometimes. No one should take any of this too serious.

I don't have an opinion whether Anderson might have more stuff left. I'd guess probably not.

I do know that he had a more successful career than almost all of the pitchers that anyone wanted to draft ahead of him and certainly the OF with the giant hole in his swing that never did anything.

2016 was an ugly first round. Only one player (Dodger C Will Smith) with double figure bWAR at this point. Highest pitcher bWAR is Cal Quantrill at 8.2 in more than 2.5 times innings compared to Anderson. People can go ahead and dog on him and unless he shows a lot more than he's shown thus far, he's probably riding the DFA train out of town in March.

Anderson likely isn't what he was, but he looked to be a MOR pitcher before the injury even with his obvious warts. One of the primary reasons the Braves drafted him was to save on the bonus so they could take a couple of tougher signs later in the first amd early second rounds. Those picks turned out to be Joey Wentz and Kyle Muller. Neither of those high-ceiling/high-risk picks turned out well. Clark and company went all in on promise in that draft, but it was a terrible draft for the Braves.
