2025 Spring Training Thread

2016 was an ugly first round. Only one player (Dodger C Will Smith) with double figure bWAR at this point. Highest pitcher bWAR is Cal Quantrill at 8.2 in more than 2.5 times innings compared to Anderson. People can go ahead and dog on him and unless he shows a lot more than he's shown thus far, he's probably riding the DFA train out of town in March.

Anderson likely isn't what he was, but he looked to be a MOR pitcher before the injury even with his obvious warts. One of the primary reasons the Braves drafted him was to save on the bonus so they could take a couple of tougher signs later in the first amd early second rounds. Those picks turned out to be Joey Wentz and Kyle Muller. Neither of those high-ceiling/high-risk picks turned out well. Clark and company went all in on promise in that draft, but it was a terrible draft for the Braves.

Got us a ring though. We don’t win the World Series without Anderson.

Sad that he’s toast.

Anderson might make sense as a buy-low candidate for a hopeless rebuilding team like the White Sox. But if you're a team that actually cares about the outcome of its games, it's hard to justify going out of your way to acquire Ian Anderson.

I don't have an opinion whether Anderson might have more stuff left. I'd guess probably not.

I do know that he had a more successful career than almost all of the pitchers that anyone wanted to draft ahead of him and certainly the OF with the giant hole in his swing that never did anything.

Soroka signed a 1 year 9 million contract and he was as bad or worse than Anderson was his last year on the majors

Soroka was very good out of the pen last year, that’s why he got that contract. His strikeout rate was elite, that’s something teams will look at and try to build off of. His slider is rated plus and he still has the arm strength and command that Anderson does not have.

Anderson has no attributes working in his favor. He would not get the same contract right now.

Name a pitcher with bad stuff and command who is decent. Thats who Anderson is right now.

Yet I see people complain all the time in game threads that our offense cant hit pitchers throwing meatballs. Where are we getting these ratings on his stuff and command from post surgery? His 10 AAA starts after TJ? 2 ST starts? Is there some post surgery pitch data I am not aware of?

He can’t spin a baseball. Soroka on the other hand gets elite spin, specifically on his slider. Anderson has never been able to develop a breaking pitch, never shown command, and it’s been 4 years since we saw his peak stuff which wasn’t that great to begin with. He is a big reason we won the World Series. He has no major league attributes now, he’s showing up to a gun fight with no bullets in his arsenal.

Grant Holmes who was a 10 year minor league journeyman currently is a far better pitcher with better stuff.

So to sum things up he is no longer as good as he once was but even if he was he was never anything good to begin with. Did I get that right?

Basically yes.

I will ease off my doom on him to be fair. He has a killer change. The problem is he has to be hitting 94/95 on his fastball and to be able to locate (not just throw strikes) for that to be effective. If Anderson can get back to that person then I would say he can be a good #5 pushing to a #4 with 2 times through the order. But he has to show that and so far he hasn’t. Even in the minors.

The last season he pitched in the majors he had the worst k/bb rate. Walking a ton of guys and not striking anyone out. He was trending his way out of the majors BEFORE he got hurt. He was trending downward significantly ever since he made his debut but go ahead and argue numbers.

You keep arguing he could get back to what he was pre injury but what he was then was a pitcher who had trended towards a really bad pitcher.

If you haven't been to Cool Today Park you need to check it out. Nicest ST facility I've been to. The players are a lot more accessible and laid back down here too.

Maybe the injury was effecting him before the ligament was fully torn. TJ is almost always a wear and tear injury. It can be caused all at once but thats rare. Odds are he was pitching with a partial tear months before the complete tear.

Hitting a baseball is really difficult. Even a pitcher with objectively terrible stuff and command by Major League standards will be tough to hit in an absolute sense. Don Wengert once had a month where he threw seven innings in a start and gave up one run, and another start that month where he gave up one run in six innings. Sometimes bad pitchers are going to have good games. So, yes, Anderson is capable of good starts. That's not really the question.

I legitimately think Spencer Swhellenbach is going to be in the Cy Young conversation this year. This kid has an absurdly deep arsenal
