06/01/2025 GDT: Red Sox at Braves - Nick the Stick is Back

Amazing that AA built a team specifically to slug and then he hires a new hitting coach in an effort to make more contact. I’m not saying it’s Hyers’ fault, because I don’t think hitting coaches make that big of a difference overall, but clearly AA thought this team needed a change of approach. Which, of course, doesn’t make a whole lot of sense when the team he built is meant to hit homers first and foremost. And it seemed like a knee-jerk reaction/over correction after last year, which is never a good thing for a GM to do.

It just shows you that while I don’t think AA is a bad GM at this point, he hasn’t been firing on all cylinders. I guess executives go through slumps too.

I still say that not even making an attempt to get Ozuna, Murphy, and Baldwin’s bats in the lineup at the same time with this team’s struggles is bordering on malpractice.

13th in walk rate.

But it doesn’t help when you do hit a wall scraper Harris or Ozzie before someone crawled his ass was up there at the top

Funny you say this, I was about to post this: I really wonder if the Braves will fire Tim Hyers sometime in the near future. They may give him some grace but this season's offense is stastically worse than last season and that's almost impossible. Aside from Baldwin and maybe Murphy, everyone is underperforming. This is like a 1% outcome given the successful track record up and down the lineup.

I doubt it. It only makes sense to fire someone a year removed from a historically great season.

I honestly think they need to give it until the All-Star break to see if things eventually come together. If not, I think you make some trades and plan to go into the second half and then next season with a slightly different team. Not a rebuild but a retool.

In the 26 offensive innings against the Red Sox, the Braves only scored in 4 of those innings -- and 3 of those 4 innings were just 1 run.

I like Crochet a lot and think he's a great pitcher but we should have put 5-6 runs on him yesterday.

It’s interesting because I agree with you- but the radio crew was saying that Crochet’s effort was the most formidable against us so far this year

That HR stat is a weird one. To put it in perspective:
With 2 or 3 men on base:
2024 30 HR in 813 PA, or 1 every 27.1 PA
vs 213 HR in 6075 PA total, or 1 every 28.5 PA

2025 4 HR in 299 PA, or 1 every 74.8 PA
vs 62 HR in 2201 PA total, or 1 every 35.5 PA

So HR are down overall, and the situation comes up about the same amount (13%), so its not lack of attempts.

But the HR rate with 2 or 3 runners on seems statistically impossible. It's less than half the amount you would expect. If the Braves had 9 in those situations, that would have added at least 27 more runs to the ledger.

It can't be anything more than an anomaly at this point and that should self correct... I think? The more concerning aspect is HR are down overall. Even getting 5 more HR in those on base situations doesn't get the Braves back to 2024 numbers, and 2024 numbers were down for various reasons.

Since maybe the braves best hitter has been out, I would think the overall hr numbers are down for this reason

I very seriously think the Braves will end up figuring it out, or at least normalizing at some point. My bigger concern is going on a huge run just to miss the playoffs and waste another year of our window.

This team is not making the playoffs. Too many teams to catch at this point and the pitching is not going to hold up like it is. Just like we expect the hitting to regress to the positive.. the pitching will probably regress to the negative.

This team has been doubted to many times over the past few years to count them out. Nobody thought they'd run down the Mets a few years ago and did. Nobody thought we had a chance to make the playoffs last year with all the injuries and we did. The team is finally getting healthy and I think they do turn things around soon and go on a run.
