FIFA World Cup 2014

I'm going to travel to ATL when the new club starts play. I know that a lot of folks in my area (upstate SC) are excited about the prospect. The more the US gets exposure in the WC, the more potential for converting fans in places like this.

ESPN having skin in the game helps too. They're basically singlehandedly keeping the NBA afloat. With their interest in soccer they'll advertise heavy and it will be good for the USA.

I think we've found one of our national debates for the 2024 Presidential Debate... Is soccer destroying America? The right will give thanks to Ann Coulter for starting the movement in 2014.

By 2024 even Republicans will be wearing scarves and habla espanol.

Well, we should've seen more of Julian Green this World Cup. That finish was sick. If Dempsey could've done half as well on his myriad chances, we're through. Oh well.

Seriously, Dempsey really disappointed me. Should've had 2. I also don't understand how Wondo missed that point blank chance (was totally onside). Our back line was actually really good.. We just couldn't keep possession.

Most people that follow US soccer were dumbfounded that Green was included....most think it was just to ensure he has a spot for the future.

All of a sudden he puts in a goal on his first touch and HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN PLAYING MORE!

Even today many of the shots on Timmy weren't super threatening. SOme were absolute stunners of course but that's what great goalies do. They make the big saves when called upon. More of them were saves hemakes every day.

Belgium dominated possession but the US was threatening by crashing them on the wings. I think if the US had Jozy up front and healthy they score within 90 minutes.

Cmon Zeets, they had a blitzkrieg on Howard, many chances were one on one chances that Howard was barely able to get a foot or arm on or shots were just outside the net.

We have a ways to go, but certainly have some promising young players that hopefully grow in the next 4 years.

We saw last night why everyone had Belguim as their darkhorse and also why they've been such a disappointment. They have all the tools to be a world cup winning side. I've been extremely impressed with Origi (who I think is like 19?) They have creativety, strength, technical ability, and world class defenders (Kompany). But, they lack that killer instinct and seem to go through the motions at times.

As a Spurs follower, I was dumbfounded that Vertoghen could destroy the right side of our defense as a LB. He's not even a natural LB and is uncomfortable going forward.

However, USA put more energy/effort than any other team in the tourney and that is at least something to be proud of.

Some were truly fantastic saves. But others (most) were half chances. From outside the 18 where howard is usually gold. And some of the one on ones were in super tight windows that he had say a 75/25 advantage. Howard was absolutely a beast and the reason the US were in the match was their goal keeping, but for those who follow the US, dominant goalkeeping is expected. We've had it for years with Howard, Friedel, Keller, and Tony Meola. Guzan should continue that trend and Hamid/Johnson could contend with him. And Timmy's performance will likely inspire another generation of great American goalies.

US needs to improve for next world cup, their draw can't be much tougher, hard not to be excited about the current crop of potential 4 world cup US players. Bradley, Green, Yedlin, Brooks, and Jozy all could be 4 world cup players (aka playing in 4 world cups) which wasn't done until Beasley did it.

Vertonghen killed it early cause Zusi left Johnson on an island to cover De Bruyne/Hazard which left Vertonghen free to make runs without being challenged. Also Geoff Cameron.

US's midfield was a big let down yesterday. They basically left the back 4 out to dry most of the game. Only one who put in A effort to get back when out of position was Bradley. Cameron, Zusi, and Jones seemed content to just stay with the play not get ahead of it and forced our defense to make plays, considering the cumulative World Cup experience of our defense (as defenders) was 0 games before, Gonzilla and Besler have good chemistry which I think helped, but we had much to be desired.

ALso can't be understated was the overall tough draw the US had. Getting Germany on shorter rest than them after coming from the Jungle. Having the most travelling miles of anyone in the tourney (Don't think Belgium could make it to 9000 miles)

Kids to keep in mind over the next 4 years:

Ben Lederman- 14 years old, training at Barcelona (probably be too young for next world cup)

Josh Perez- 17. Father played for US team. He is with Fiorentina, but had been linked with AC Milan.

Junior Flores 18. Plays with Borussia Dortmund reserves.

Villyan Bijez/Marc Pelosi. Trains with Liverpool

Im still sad (as a DC UNited fan) that Andy Najar choose Honduras.

Ben Lederman is one I'll curtail my Freddy Adu boner for until he shows more technical skills. But hopefulyl the Barca Academy does it for him. I doubt he'll make his way to the senior squad.

Green, zelalem (lock it up, JK), brooks, yedlin, chandler, altidore, Bradley, Durant, Westbrook, wall, kemba walker, steph curry....we're in good shape for 2018

So how long can Seattle Sounders hold onto Yedlin? Would love for him to go to the Bundesliga. Would really love for him to train with Steve Cherundolo to learn a bit more about the mental side of the game.

I love this argument. Did I say he shouldn't be included? (hint: no.) Then why would you say this to me?

I watch a ton of US soccer.

First of all, I said that somewhat in jest. But he would've been a useful late sub against Germany, and probably could have come on earlier yesterday. Don't think that's outlandish.

Top drawing team in NBA averaged 21,716 this year (Bulls) last year's top drawing MLS team averaged 44,038. Removing the Sounders who're kind of an anomaly the next highest was LA Galaxy 22,152. The league as a whole averaged 1,400 more fans per game and MLS is on the rise while NBA is dying. NBA is only sticking around because of their TV deals. Guess where most of that money comes from? Guess who also is the number 1 champion of the NBA? Here's a hint, it's ESPN. Sure some teams would still be around, but you can bet that NBA would be considering contracting.

Bc anyone saying Green deserved more time probably doesn't watch much US soccer.

Green was the pace off the bench. He should have been used against Germany. We used Yedlin but we should have put Green in instead of Bedoya or at least Diskerud.
