Braves Meeting with Lester

It was meant as a tongue in cheek type joke. It's gonna come down to the benjamins, it always does....ala Mike Hampton and Denver's school systems.

Although I don't believe that dollars are the only factor in player for Lester, as I believe he will make his choice based on a balanced decesion of winning, dollars, and comfort.

So, Boston in other words?

I tend to agree, not that we have a shot.

Dont see why Lester would waste a few years if the plan is "2017"

I don't understand all this talk about 2017 being the year the Braves can compete again? Just because they have a new stadium slated to open automatically makes a team a contender? Worked wonders for the Twins and Target Field.

They actually made the playoffs that year.

If we're looking to attract season ticket holders for 2017, then the plan could be to "compete" next year, win in 2016, and set up the hype going in to 2017. We're not going to be bad for the next two years, as there'd be no hype going into 2017.

So, revert back to 2009 and 2010 just so we can get back to 2013.

Well I always thought that we we're building a potential dynasty from 12-14 if Wren would have stayed the course AND if it wasn't for some potential devestating injuries to some potential key components.

Wren made some moronic moves primarily in FA that is costing us the potential to salvage that run in the short term, along with key injuries, AND guys not reaching for one reason or another their perceived ceilings.

When I look back at that era, and the shortcomings in particularly 2010, the collapse of 2011, and the way it ended in 12 & 13 I get angry, really angry. And then I look at an organization like the Giants and their success and lesser talented teams I become absolutely livid.

This is a team that was to be built around Heyward & Freeman offensively with good complimentary pieces, a rotation headlined by Tommy Hanson along with the likes of Jurrjens, Tehran, Minor, Medlen, Beachy, Wood, etc and an elite end of the game bullpen built around Kimbrel & Venters.

Sounds an awful lot like digging yourself a hole and saying you need it to get back above ground.

It sucks but the Braves are essentially the A's now. Having to pick and choose what players to keep and trade the rest to rebuild. Just have to hope you pick the right players.

I don't think ANYBODY predicted Melvin Jr. falling off the planet like this, this fast. Maybe years 3-5 were going to be rough, but 1-2 I would've suspected we'd have gotten decent production from him.

If he even performed anywhere near his career norms up to that point, the contract doesn't look anywhere that bad. But not only has BJ been terrible, he's been HISTORICALLY DATING BACK TO THE BEGINNING OF BASEBALL terrible.

Outside of Justin we have had terrible luck with bringing in hitters the last few years.

I just feel like we could continue to be competitive while not blowing up the team if we wanted to.

Possibly. I'm not sure how the team would look after 2015 if Justin and Jason left with us only getting draft picks. But I am of the belief that if you have a team that could win it all then go for it. Don't tear it down (even if slightly) in hopes of going for it in a couple of years. As a couple of years generally never come.

Exactly.

We're pretty far removed from that 2013 team, even before the Heyward trade. 2013 team included Huddy, Mac, and a healthy Medlen, with Gattis as the sort of "super sub" coming off the bench and starting at catcher/LF. Not sure why so many people thought it was likely we were going to make the playoffs next yr after the **** storm we witnessed in 2014 and the little payroll flexibility we had to improve to team.

Fact is, we probably had less than 20 million in payroll flexibility before the trade. And that just isn't enough to fix all the glaring holes we had/still have on our team. We had one of the worst offenses in the league in 2014. We finished under .500. And we just lost over 400 innings of quality pitching that will have to be replaced. And our farm system is bereft of top end talent, meaning trading for hitting/pitching help isn't that likely using prospects. And combine all that with the fact that, aside from Philly, the other NL East teams are on the upswing and primed to be better in 2015. Simply put, the playoffs would have been a long shot and I think unbiased observers would say the same.

We had the core. All you have to do is be a little creative at that point. When you have that core, you try to win at all costs.
