Braves sign Chase Utley (lite) to a minor league deal

How does this thread turn into a Beltre HOF debate??

When a man loves a player very, very much . . .

Besides, there is quite possibly nothing this board can say about Kelly Johnson that hasn't been said approximately eleventy threve bazillion times over the last decade or so.

That's not the point. Has nothing to do with my opinion. It's about what's realistic. Somebody who, at best, finished 9th in MVP voting and had 3 All Star appearances, clearly wasn't regarded as "a cut above the rest" during his active playing career. Eventually, retiring isn't going to change anything. The guy will have earned a very nice living, playing a fun sport with over 3 months off.

Anyhow, spend the time with that site. That was the reason for posting it.

It is very much your opinion that he has no chance at getting in. All that I -along with others- are saying is that a case could be made (either way) for Ramirez.

I stopped reading after Utley! This is great news. Really turns the season around if he can stay healthy. Can't believe the Phillies let him go.

Yeah, I'm really surprised we could fit him in, salary-wise. But it explains why we let Pena, who clearly looks like a Hart player, go to the Padres.

As said before, which you apparently missed, is we can wait until 5 years after retirement and re-visit the subject, assuming this forum is still active. If he receives more than 50% of the vote, you can say "told ya so."

Yes, it's understood that there's very much a "follow the crowd" element within the membership here. You must also understand that some of them don't actually attend games, have a grasp of the history and basically just play around on the internet all day long.

Unless you're going to visit the posted site (this was intended as a favor) to show a number of great or even excellent players who are not in the Hall. Nothing distinguishes this player from them.

So what if a couple of posters "think there's a case"? What matters is if 75% of those who vote think so and they won't. This player isn't even discussed as being special while active, so there's no reason to expect some massive re-assessment in the future.

I tell you what... you are exactly right.
