Braves in talks with DBacks for Trevor Cahill

I just don't get the lover affair with Cody Martin. Jackie Bradley Jr. has legitimate upside. Could be a perennial all-star if he reaches his potential. What is Martin's realistic upside? Long reliever or 4/5 starter?

I see Martin developing into a consistent 200-inning #3.

Ok good haha. I got scared for a second. Assumed that's who you meant since we're talking Dbacks.

I was referencing the post about flipping Cahill (after trading Martin for him) for Jackie Bradley Jr.

Wait where is everyone getting that we're going to trade them prospects? I'm just curious.

I don't believe that's the case at all. That the Braves must spend their allowance or Liberty will take it back.

Where else would it go? While I can only speculate, it would seem the the Braves have never operated in manner that would suggest extra money is rolled over to the next year.

How would you explain the Braves not having enough money to make a significant in-season acquisition last year? Money that was alloted to Ervin Santana.

Well sure, I think they have a budget to spend within a in fiscal year. But I don't see the Braves making any significant moves at the deadline (at least as far as bringing in an expensive player). We've spent so much time and resources this spring building up the farm.

I just don't like Cahill and since we already decided to bust up the '27 Yankees, I suppose it doesn't matter a rip how we spend our budget. If it's like my company, you might better spend it or next year they'll cut you back.

But Cahill to me is sloppy, and I don't just mean that he's a fat pig. You have to approach the job with precision. I can remember making about a two inch adjustment on the rubber when I was twelve years old. Cahill, well, I don't think he's seen his feet since his 18-8 year. It's kind of like watching John Daly golf. Grip it and rip it. Oh, sure, there are some magic moments, but imagine how good he'd be if he dedicated himself to his craft.

The guy's walk rates are approaching 5/9 IP. Every time I see him, I see no growth. Surely a pitching coach or two has pointed out that if he repeated his delivery, he could throw more strikes.

He's either stupid or stubborn. Maybe both. I don't like stupid pitchers. Yes, he throws a 94 mph bowling ball of a sinker; no, I don't think Roger will have success fixing him. Roger is often successful with guys who are humble and coachable, not Cadillacing on that phat contract they signed a few years back.

Well, we had to find a SP that could match Harang's ugliness factor from last season.

Wow. I like him, but... really?

Don't see why he's not the number five. All he does is get guys out. Either we're going to figure that out or someone else will. There was a time when we didn't give a **** what the radar gun said.

I pretty much agree, but Cahill doesn't throw 94 mph--MLBTR called him a "soft-tossing right-hander" for a reason. It seems to me some here are living in the past concerning Cahill. He has been on the decline for a while now and was terrible last year as a starter.

I would say his FIP/xFIP tell a different story. He still had a decent amount of ground balls and he was striking more guys out. I really believe that you can't put a GB pitcher on a fast track.

As MLBTR notes: "...despite the increase in strikeouts, his bottom-line results were the worst of his career overall. Cahill recorded a 5.61 ERA in 110 2/3 innings last year and saw his once-elite ground-ball rate drop to a solid but unspectacular 48.5 percent. A fluky strand rate didn’t help his cause, but there are certainly reasons to be concerned for a soft-tossing right-hander that doesn’t miss bats and is seeing his control and ground-ball capabilities deteriorate."

As long as I'm reading these stats right from his fangraphs page it looks like Cahill had his highest percentge swinging strike rate along with his lowest contact percentage for his whole career. For what its worth, David Price had a swinging strike rate of 10.5% last year.

His fastball velocity was .2 MPH off his highest in his career and his sinker .1MPH slower.

I'm just not sure these reports are accurate iwth the data we have. I don't watch the guy pitch ever so many the eye test tells a different story but I think with Simmons/Peterson and hopefully a better 3B behind him then we could flip him for a nice prospect at the deadline or just use his option next year.

I'm trying to upload his pitch f/x velo chart and can't seem to get it to work right. But his velocity has been up in 2013-14 compared to 2012. It does touch 94, though it sits closer to 91. He's not a soft tosser. He sucks, but not because he's slow.

Again, that MLBTR quote is inaccurate.
