GDT 8/1/13: Rockies (Bettis) @ Braves (Teheran) 7:10 PM

Anyone worried about how they will manage Julio's innings? We need him for the postseason but I worry about the long term effects of a long first season for him.

I'm more worried about how many pitches than innings.

He could throw 9 innings every game for all I care if he is only throwing 85 pitches a game.

The 5 innings 100 pitches thing is not good for him or our bullpen because it means some hitters are getting deep into a lot of counts and he's trying to compensate by throwing past them too hard instead of trying to get them out.

Let's see, in 2011 he threw 163 innings. Last year he threw 137. He's probably okay to go 185 or so as I think the recommendation is increasing by 20 to 25 innings over previous maximum. He's at 136 innings including today's game.

There are 53 games left in the season. If Teheran starts 10 of those and averages 5 1/3 innings per start (he's averaged just over 5 per start this year so far, and hopefully they'd limit his innings in his starts) he'd be at about 189 innings - right about where we'd want him. But you also have to hope he starts in the playoffs half a dozen times, where if he's pitching well you can't limit his innings.

So it'd be smart to skip him fairly a few times in the rotation as long as we have a big lead. Maybe alternate between him and Wood in the rotation. Hopefully they're just waiting for Maholm to get back before they do it.
 
Wow, it was so great to be able to see that homestand on TV every night. The Braves really rolled. 51-16 run differential. Just about everyone in the lineup was going good.

The Rockies announcers apologized for butchering Terdoslavich's name on Monday while he was at bat tonight, and immediately butchered it again. I snickered.
 
Luis Avilan has no run allowed since June, 8th and only 1 since May, 21th!

Best reliever in the MLB in this span!

Teheran threw in the winter league last year. He is good to go around 200 this year I think.
 
August is Justin's month! I say he will hit 14 HRs this month!
On Aug. 1st he has one homer more then all july!
 
Maybe he just likes months that start with "A"?

I nominate changing October to Actober.

That's actually an interesting point that's overlooked. So does that total go towards this years total, or last years innings total

I think because of the long rest afterwards that its part of last years total. But, I have no clue what I'm talking about.

If we maintain our lead and clinch early, I can see Teheran getting an extra few days rest in September. Problem with that is that you want to keep guys sharp and that's difficult to do if you're sitting ten days between starts.

He has pitched extremely well this year. My guess is that they were working with him on some things in Gwinnett last year and hence the dip in performance. It's my conjecture that they were trying to teach him to pitch to contact a little bit so he wouldn't think he has to strike everybody out to be successful. There's no question Teheran has electric stuff and it's great to see him doing well.
