Braves trade CJ for Swisher, Bourn, $$$

Their contracts are only guaranteed through next year, so this "hurts" 2016, but likely frees up even more money for 2017. If it is as reported - Swisher, Bourn, 10+ million for Johnson - I like it.

That's how I see it as well. Contracts coming off the books sooner is better for that magical 17.

Wow, didn't see that coming....

Does Bourne turn into a trade piece? Apparently he's turning in good #'s since the all the all star break.

Basically the money we owe CJ over the next two years will be paid to Bourn and Swisher next season, and then we're off the hook. I think it makes a lot of sense with eyes on 2017.

Lefty lead off guy isn't bad either. He's pretty much Perez with better defense.

We really shouldn't be grabbing FA's this offseason in my opinion. We need those FA's prime years to be 2017-2020. Anyone you get now might be falling off too hard.

that is what i was hinting at in the other thread

it makes more sense with the players available to go after this group than after 2016

This, combined with the stupid stirrups confrontation (why not just let him wear them?), likely means the end of Maybin. I would expect a trade before next year.

According to Shanks, Swisher has only played 1 game in the field this year? Maybe he means 1 game in the outfield?

I don't see that even being remotely close to what is going on here. This was about getting rid of CJoh.

Obviously, but it means we basically take all of the money owed CJ and lump it all in for 2016. Which obviously frees up more for 2017, but it also means it will be extremely hard to put a competitive team on the field for next year...which, again, is strange after getting Olivera.

It's not a horrible deal, just kind of a weird one. I would honestly rather have CJ's bad but at least manageable salary for both 2016 and 2017 than to have a really bad salary for next year and nothing for 2017. Some may feel differently, but this is weird to me.

Bourn is the key. He's been pretty solid since the break, hitting around .300 with an OBP around .350.

If this is true, it makes it more palatable. I agree this probably pushes a trade of Maybin in the offseason, but with his contract for next year combined with his OPS, which is now about .700, I'm not sure we'll get much of anything for him.

If we get 10 million, we basically pay 11.5 million (29-10-7.5) next year plus the prorated salaries this year, and then we turn around and likely free up 9 million in 2017. That's a pretty damn good deal, really.

I like this deal a lot. I wouldn't have objected if we had just cut CJ. He was, by all accounts, a pain in the clubhouse. His relationship with the Braves was toxic and everyone knew it. He wanted out as much as we wanted to get rid of him.

So instead of eating all his cash and getting nothing, we get a guy in Bourn who could be a useful bench player and who could be a great influence on Mallex. Swisher I could care less about. I almost wonder if he's a Carlos Quentin type where we DFA him.

They are essentially just paying off all of Chris Johnson's contract in 2016 assuming the cash evens things out.

It's possible they just release Bourn and Swisher.

I hope we don't DFA Swisher. I think the change could do him some good. Loved watching him play in Oakland.

Well, we'd be adding $11.5 million to the payroll for next year for the ability to free the books for 2017. Not a bad deal, but it does mean we have likely taken ourselves off the market for any impact FA this year.

I think that's a terrible idea. You play them and see if one or both can bounce back enough to trade them at the deadline next year. You're basically freerolling with them.

I wonder why we didn't just release him and set aside money from the 2016 payroll to pay his 2017 salary and buyout. I assume its a tax issue but I doubt it's worth the extra $10 million we're going to have to pay to Bourn and Swisher.

2017 has always been the year from the beginning for Hart. He is taking an unusual path to get there, but I think this is a nice solid step in that direction. One of the best he's made, really.
