Braves trade CJ for Swisher, Bourn, $$$

Yea, I think they decided to go with Bourn and unload Maybin before next season.

If Bourn plays well in the next couple months and rebuilds some value, he might be the one to go. Either way it makes sense to trade one of Bourn and Maybin. Whichever one attracts the best offer. And I would offer to kick in some money to pay their salaries and a second tier prospect or two to get a top tier prospect.

We've gotten an 84 wRC+ and terrible defense (-12 UZR) from LF so far and Maybin doesn't seem to be cutting it defensively in center, so I think we'll slide Maybin over to left and let Bourn handle center. I assume we'll stick with that arrangement until Smith is ready.

I'm not sure Olivera's expected production in 2016 out-weighs Wood's.

The plan may be to field a palatable team in 2016 that might make the playoffs. But it seems to me that the Swisher-Bourn-CJ trade indicates that the front office is willing to sacrifice some wins in 2016 (by tying up so much of the payroll in Swisher and Bourn) for wins in 2017 (by elminating the financial obligation to CJ).

I think we're more or less in agreement that the FO is prioritizing 2017 over 2016. I expect the 2017 40-man roster to be stronger than the 2016 version. Based on the media reports, it sounds like some version of the CJ for Swisher swap was on the verge of completion right before he went on the DL in June. So I think there's a reasonable chance that the Braves made the Olivera trade while already knowing that they had a strong chance of making a deal w/ the Indians once Swisher was activated. In any event, I'm not expecting any more significant moves that would weaken the MLB product in 2016.

Yahtzee!

The $ Indians are sending to ATL is closer to $15M. Not the $10M reported. Braves take on ~$4M of Swisher salary and Bourn/Johnson ~a wash.

Hope this is true.

I hear what you are saying, but I think Maybin in CF has not been the disaster some think. He has not made a couple of plays (every player does that occasionally), but he has made some very good plays, and most all of the ones you would expect. I think some of the idea that Maybin is a weak defender is that he doesn't look as smooth doing it as some others.

I am sure someone will come up with a stat I don't know about to argue otherwise, but I don't see him as a big weakness out there.

Why can't it be both? Neither figures in long term.

The error in this line of thinking is the idea that it actually matters what the circumstances are for your small sample size. The fact that the stakes were higher doesn't change the fact that the sample is too small to gauge properly. Weird things happen in baseball, it doesn't mean a player can't perform in the playoffs.

This is all a moot point, though. At this stage in his career it's very likely that he is unable to help a team in the playoffs no matter what.

You're not going to teach me anything impressive. Swisher only had one good playoff season in his entire career. So, it's not as if advancing age/health are the only factors preventing him from contributing to a team that is serious about winning. His act grows tired pretty quickly. That's why he jumps from team to team.

LOL

After meeting with the media, Swisher walked back toward his locker and said "Hotlanta baby...wooo"
He's excited to be here.

Daniel Castro and Todd Cunningham will be optioned to Gwinnett to make room for Bourn and Swisher. This signals Simmons is ready to play.

Looks like Maybin is staying in CF

Bourn played 1 game in LF this year w/ CLE, 79 games in LF in '07 w/ Philies. #Braves Fredi G said he volunteered before could ask him.

Bourn should play CF unless this is only to try and improve Maybin's stock due to trade purposes later. If going by defense Bourn has saved 4 runs according to DRS this year while Maybin has been pretty bad with a -15 DRS in CF. Further, my guess is they're more interested in Maybin maintaining and improving his value for trade purposes than they are hoping Bourn will gain such. That would explain going with Maybin over Bourn in CF anyway. Then again it could just be Fredi being Fredi again.

That said, another angle for going for the worse defender of the two in CF is that the Braves need enough losses for a protected draft pick. So from that angle I'd want Maybin in CF and Bourn in LF.

If we move both that would be even better. Right now Bourn has very little value, but he could rebuild some of it.

Bourn could rebuild his value but I doubt he does this late in the year. Plus they expect to have him mentor Mallex Smith next Spring Training (I think they'll have lockers next to eachother too). So if he ends up traded it is more likely at or sometime before next year's trade deadline than this off-season. In other words, I think they're looking to move Maybin first and maybe even before Sept. depending on offers.

I honestly really like this trade. We get rid of CJ who's become a useless player for two more veteran leader types. Time will tell how they will produce but I have much more confidence in Swisher and Bourn bringing some value to the team over CJ.

Both Bourn and Eury Perez have sizable platoon splits and would complement each other well. I suspect a Bourn / Perez platoon would pretty easily match Maybin's overall value in CF. I definitely think Maybin's days are numbered. I just wish he would have been traded a couple months ago when his value seemed a bit higher.

Maybin looks like he may be getting out of his funk where he was hitting weak grounders. He might be ready to go on a lil hot streak.

Doing the math on the salary swap, it looks like our salary expense for 2015 increases about $7.25m with this deal. So the worst case scenario for 2016 budgeting purposes would be that only $7.75m of the supposed $15m sent by Cleveland will be left to allocate for 2016. If we keep all these OFs (unlikely), that still leaves us with as much as $40m to add a veteran SP, a setup RP, and a Catcher.

I'd just be pretty happy for us to make the playoffs at this point. If Swisher sucks in the playoff, he's going to fit right in with the Braves tradition.
