Braves trade CJ for Swisher, Bourn, $$$

As much as I am forever annoyed by the idea that shifting the se amount of money from 2 years to 1 year is somehow better in a league without a salary cap, I do support this trade. CJ was a toxic asset for us, so taking on Bourn and Swisher might be a positive for us. If either of them can rebound even a little, we can maybe get a decent return for them if we eat their salary. That was never going to happen with CJ.

Maybin has been expendable since the day he arrived.

The perception that he wasn't was created by those willing to grasp on to anything that looked positive for the short term.

But, that's just the issue - short term. Unless Maybin turned himself into a .280, 25hr outfielder he was ALWAYS short term.

People should be a little miffed that the team didn't pull the trigger (assuming a deal that would be acceptable) when the Maybin wave was at the high water mark. Now, that wave is rolling back, maybe to return, maybe not but creating at least some doubt again as to even his marginal value to other teams.

I think the plan was to get rid of CJ anyway possible while not eating more money than they had too. I think they are hoping for anything they can get out of Bourn. Would not be surprised to see us just cut Swisher

They might, but not yet. Swisher is going to play 1B while Fredito is on the DL

I've been highly critical of many moves by the Johns; however, I must express satisfaction with this deal. Johnson needed to be gone. We found a suitor for his contract, got back 2 potentially useful pieces, and most importantly, shed money for '17.

Bourn and Swisher may not get back on track. If so, they walk after next year, and we have money to use for '17. We could use that money for FA, taking on money in trades or international signings.

I still think we need to sign at least 1 SP this offseason, maybe 2. I don't think we will, nor do I think big ticket FAs will come here, but I hope we attempt to sign Price or Cueto.

Lastly, I'd sign Wieters to solve C. We should have gotten back a long term C in one of our many deals. We dropped the ball there, so now we need to sign one.

C-Wieters

1b-Free

2b-Jace

3b-Olivera

SS-Simba

Cf-Maybin

RF-Markakis

LF-Bourn/Swisherl

Not great, not terrible. Still lots of question marks, but potentially a serviceable lineup if a few guys produce to their capability.

Rotation:

Price

Shelby

Teheran

Wisler

Banuelos/Folty

I would not be opposed to dealing Teheran for a long term LF (not a 30 year old).

A singing BJ sounds interesting. I guess it all depends on the tempo.

What, are you in a ****ing a capella group? Play the goddamn part!

Is weiters good? He's a boras guy so he'll get way overpaid

Not really. He's talented, but has had trouble staying healthy. Good for a .750ish OPS, which isn't bad for a C. Will be 30 next year, so meh. I'd rather just try and bring Mac back lol

I was on TEAM REBUILD until the Alex Wood trade...we were all about getting younger and then we trade a good, young, controllable for four more years pitcher, JJ, Avilan and our TOP PROSPECT for one 30 year old PROSPECT...at least one more solid prospect should have came to Atlanta and since you mentioned catcher Austin Barnes would have been perfect and really fair actually...if the FO didn't even inquire about him in that trade then I have no clue WTF is going on

And a top 30 pick in a deep draft.

Over at Scout, certain members of the "stathead" contingent expressed great interest in Swisher. This was despite the fact that he had a reputation as being a clown, and was the second most hated player in all of baseball after Pierczynski. So, the point was raised about his career post season OPS. which was completely ignored. (Keep in mind that OPS was the state du jour, and Columbus hadn't yet discovered WAR.) His career post season OPS currently resides at .575. Of course, you might expect the tired "small sample size" line, but he has appeared in 12 playoff series.

Bottom line is if they're going to win a championship, it won't be with him.

So lets look at this trade, we moved Johnson (owed 17.5M in 16 and 17) to take on Bourn and Swisher who're owed about 29M less about 10M or so, so basically we traded Johnson, for an OF log jam that will cost us at least 2M more. Assuming we're smart enough not to trigger thier PA bonus.

Upside to this move is assuming we sandbag them for PA early on, is if they seem decent we can probably trade them for prospects. Downside is that we have 4 OFers making serious money.

185 PA is still a very small sample. For roughly 180 PA this year Jimmy Paredes was one of the best hitters in baseball. Maybe we should go after him.
