Farewell to Wood, Peraza, Jimmy Johns, and Avilans.

I don't think the ownership wants to spend the winter of 2016-2017 trying to sell business suites and season tickets for a team that was not competitive in 2016. There will be a blitz marketing campaign for the new stadium, and a winning team with a bright future will be part of that.

This is the way I see us being a contender as early as 2016:

1. Absolutely have to sign either Price or Grienke.
2. Olivera becomes a 280/340/480 type of hitter with average defense at third base.
3. Markakis with a offseason of of weight lifting slashes 280/350/450
4. Sign Parra to a 4 year deal and put him in LF and leading off

I think those are 4 obtainable scenarios that would put the Braves into the conversation for the playoffs.

Number 3 is pretty much out of the picture. Come on, dude.

Also, I'm not sure we are competing for the playoffs with that lineup or a rotation of Price/Miller/Teheran/........
 
Parra is a nice complimentary piece. I don't think we need complimentary pieces, we need an impact bat to go along with Freeman. I don't think mid level payroll teams can afford to pay guys like Parra what they are going to get on the free agent market.

We will see. I don't believe we have seen a healthy Markakis for a few years.
 
Looking back on this so far:

Jim Johnson has given up 12 ER in 3 2/3 IP over 4 games

Jose Peraza has a slash line of .417/.432/.639 while playing 2B, SS and CF and committing 1 error over 9 games.

Alex Wood has given up 7 ER in 11 1/3 IP over 2 starts

Luis Avilan has given up 1 ER in 3 IP over 3 games

As I've said in the past. THe peraza aspect of the trade is the only part we are going to regret. But, we better here about how his offensive stats are inflated because of the PCL since thats all we heard about Mallex.

I am fine with dealing Wood solely because I think he is an injury risk ( I understand they all are, but Wood and that delivery...) . Already had the TJ once in college... We know how hard it is to recover from 2. His value is nil if that happens.

yeah, he's had some games with the Braves where he k'd some guys. more when he didn't do much. and he had 5 in 5 IP last night. he's done that this year, plenty. that just hasn't been the only problem.

I couldn't care less about Jim Johnson.

Let's just look at the value given up for the value received. Let's assume Alex Wood averages 2.5 WAR over the next 4 years (conservative in my opinion), and Peraza averages 2 WAR over the next 6 years (also conservative in my opinion).

Now let's assume that Olivera averages 3 WAR for the next 4 years (which I think is generous).

At $7M/WAR, we're trade $154M worth of value over the next 6 years, in exchange for $84M in value.

That's a $70M value delta that we're on the wrong side. That's a lot of value that Bird, Paco, and the pick need to make up.

Those are fantastic scenarios, really.

We got a position player with our glut of pitching. Its basically what everyone has been wanting to happen, and now that it does....we bitch more?!

I just don't get you guys. Sit back and let it unfold. We have a very nice asset signed for dirt cheap, and being dirt cheap allows us to spend to add WAR to this scenario through payroll and FA acquisitions. Plus, Olivera has a TON of value to other teams now at that price. Lets not skin the cat before its dead.

Just like last offseason, this team will look drastically different on opening day.
 
also 2 WAR for Peraza over 6 years is so, so far from "conservative." He better hit .300 or he isn't getting there.

But that doesn't make much sense either. Because the money we're paying Olivera would have been around the money we would have needed to pay Wood/Peraza over the next 6 years. So not only did we lose 10 WAR with the trade, but we didn't gain much financial flexibility than what we already had.

Everyone was fine with trading pitching for hitting. But not for a hitter who we won't need to contribute until he is 32 and not for one who has absolutely no track record of ML hitting OR good health.

His defense alone is probably worth it. I'm sure he will be a better hitter than Jace - and a much better base runner. And Jace isn't too far from a 2 WAR.
