Golf Thread [2017: The Open at Royal Birkdale]

I'm improving my game. I play once a week for the last few months. It's hard separating my tennis instincts to golf.

These days I prefer a decent municipal course over a fancy country club with all the trimmings. I just want to play golf and not deal with being wined and dined or having my ego stroked.

Can someone explain to me this big outrage that took place at the woman's gold event this weekend? DAilymail paints this women as a villain and that did something unsportsmanlike.

Haven't read the article or seen the video, but apparently the American player thought her putt had been conceded and picked it up. Evidently no one conceded her putt, so the penalty was right. I would've done the same thing. The outrage might come from the fact that with so much putt conceding in team events, some might start taking all short putts for granted. It's a huge mistake to expect your putt will be given to you, especially if you're in the lead. The American player should've clearly asked if the putt was good.

Usually it's the player in the lead who does most of the putt conceding. The trailing player or team is certainly under no obligation by rule or courtesy to concede any putts, ever, nor should they be.

Gotcha. Supposedly the villains own teammates started to break down crying saying it was a dick move

They are girls - they cry. Besides, she didn't say that.

The "villain"? Gotcha. You can't expect pros to all of a sudden play by weekend rules. Even if everyone is conceding putts, you have to make sure your putt is conceded before you pick it up. Just common sense.

Its because everyone knows it was a dick move. The putt was 18 inches and it's a dick move to not concede (at the very least). But, Peterson is known to skirt the rules so pretty much everyone thinks she conceded the putt and then backed out when the American picked up her ball. The American says she clearly heard her say the putt was good. Unfortunately golf is managed by the players themselves bc 99.9% of them are honest players and there wasn't an official that could have heard the incident.

USA came back and beat them so it all worked out. If Peterson had any class at all in the first place, maybe 1 person would believe her, but no one did. I think her playing partner was even against her.

Huh? In match play you concede short putts. And peterson likely did concede it.
I think you likely weren't there and don't know if she conceded it or not. Look, even if Peterson, a professional golfer who's been playing organized golf with basically the same players day in and day out for a decade, did trick Lee into picking up her putt, which nobody is saying she did, it was still Lee's fault for letting it happen.

If Peterson really is such a "dick player" with a Machiavellian reputation, Lee should've known that and not taken anything for granted. There isn't one scenario where Lee didn't screw up by not making sure the putt was conceded.

She must be a hellacious girlfriend/wife.
Maybe I'm a sexist for saying it, but women golfers are like this. I was an assistant pro at a club for a couple summers and playing with the women on ladies day was one of my jobs. It was always something. They get nitpicky with the rules and upset easily.

What are you talking about? That is exactly what everybody is saying she did. The Americans said they Europeans conceded the putt. Puts are conceded all the time and it's a "gentlemans" game. There isn't a golfer out there that would question when another player says a putt is good.

To recap, Lee missed a putt leaving it 18 inches from the hole. Someone says something in regards to the putt being good (which no one makes anyone putt under 3-4 feet) Lee, Peterson, their caddies and the rules official walk off the green in which case the rules official says the hole is halved before Lee picks up the ball. Why did the rules official call the hole halved if the putt wasn't conceded? You don't walk off the green before the hole is completed. Worst case, it was terrible sportsmanship for the Europians to walk off the green before the hole was finished. Their actions support the conceding of the putt, but Peterson figured out a way to snatch a point by claiming no one conceded putt (which you can't prove her wrong since the rules official was walking off the green).

If Petersen didn't concede the putt, why did she walk off the green? No one walks off the green if the putt isn't conceded. Pettersen's own playing partner disagreed with what Pettersen did.

"Poor old Alison Lee must think, 'I hope I never play a Solheim Cup again'. She has had food poisoning and now she has been wronged by one of the most senior players in golf and [who] used to be one of the most respected players.

"I know Pettersen is angry and justifying everything, but she has let herself down and she has certainly let her team down. I am so glad I am not on that team this time.

On Sky Sports, recent Hall of Fame inductee Laura Davies, who is friends with Pettersen, couldn't hide her disappointment.

'Disgusted. We have got our best player, Charley Hull, who has just won a point and she is in floods of tears. That tells you the wrong thing was done.

"How Suzann can justify that I will never, ever know. We are all fierce competitors but ultimately it's unfair," Davies said. "We have to play week in, week out together and you do not do something like that to a fellow pro."

I don't think you can say "That's good. " and then unconcede the putt after the player picks up the ball. I understood the controversy to be that Lee assumed the putt was conceded by Peterson's demeanor. I don't believe you can concede a putt by walking away or any other vague body language. If she actually said, "That's good. Pick it up," the hole would've been over.

You never ever pick up your putt without a clear, vocal concession from your opponent. That's match play 101.

All the people bitching about this are basically upset over a bat flip. It was one hole in one match of a 2 day team event, not a big deal if it wasn't blown out of proportion. Tempest in a teacup. Actually, a little broohaha is good for viewers and good for the game. The Americans surely made good use of it.

The anger Laura Davies and Julie Inkster showed was in complete contradiction of their position, that the game was a friendly, non-competitive exhibition match. If that were true, why did players burst into tears over a measly loss of one hole???? Lee got sloppy, Petterson nailed her on a technicality and then the American team got motivated to win. I don't see the problem.
