Braves in talks w/ NL West club

@JeffPassan: Braves listened on Andrelton Simmons last year, too. Talked an absolute blockbuster with Yankees that would've also included Justin Upton.

@JeffPassan: When you're in Atlanta's position, you listen on everyone, even your most valuable assets. A full teardown can require a lot of creativity.

that is at least interesting, old news, but interesting....makes you wonder what the "absolute blockbuster" return would have been

Per ESPN's Adam Rubin: Right now the Braves are asking for one of the core four young pitchers from the Mets for shortstop Andrelton Simmons -- Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard or Steven Matz. At some point, maybe the asking price pivots to Atlanta native Zack Wheeler. For now, though, Mets are concentrating on the outfield since Wilmer Flores and Ruben Tejada got them to the World Series.

I don't expect anything to happen for a while. We're only at the GM meetings. This is where a lot of trades get started but not usually where they get finished. People are feeling out their options right now. I expect there to be some smoke here then things to die down over Thanksgiving and heat back up for the winter meetings.

have to agree, i could see a move happen at the winter meetings though....

it is kinda wierd that this news would come out this early. you would think that if this is true which it seems to be, the braves brass clearly want this to be priority 1A or 1B. (other being AJ re-sign)

Heyman said the perception is San Diego has enough to get Simmons. I just can't figure out what it would be. Renfroe's status has taken a hit and Hedges would be another catcher on our roster that can't hit.

I really see trading Simmons as a no brainer. I absolutely love him but if we're able to get a signifiant haul you have to do it. He's a light hitting SS with incredible defense. This team needs impact bats and can easily suffer a downgrade defensively at SS to acquire those long term pieces.

Albies is a potential special player and could end up moving quickly. I also think Daniel Castro is fine as a starter for us next year since we're not competing. He can provide similar offensive production with solid defense.

I've been saying this for a while....we have to trade Simmons if we get the right deal.

Per Nightengale: The #Braves have now fielded calls from nearly half the teams in baseball since making Andrelton Simmons available in trade talks.

I really don't wanna trade with the Mets. I hope it's the Dodgers and we don't get hosed again. But from the early asking price I doubt we will.

I figured they would striker once the rumor came out. That puts us in good position to get a haul. Bc some team always overpays.

Hopefully. Simmons' contract is what makes him so valuable. You can put him at short and not have to worry about the position for another 5 years and not have a huge payroll commitment.

Can't say I agree with Rosenthal here. He says we should be building around Simmons not trading him. He doesn't consider two things. We have Albies who we're really high on and who will hopefully unseat Simmons eventually even if we don't trade Simmons.

The other thing Rosenthal is ignoring is the possibility of getting a core player back. We could get someone back we could build around and at a position where we don't have an uber talented prosepct at.

I'd add a piece to Simmons to get more from the Dodgers. Seager, De Leon, and Peraza for Simmons and Teheran I'd do. We'd need another good starter but would have the money to sign Price or whoever we wanted to.

What I'd like to see happen . . . assess best offer from all these teams in the next week or so and then promptly say no to all of them. Move on with executing the offseason plan with the assumption that Simmons will be here. Only entertain further calls from suitors willing to increase their offers. This is essentially the Kimbrel plan. We have all the leverage here and need to act accordingly.

I'd trade Freeman to if we trade Simmons. Trade him to wherever for a haul and sign Chris Davis. We have a protected pick, and the talent we got back would make up for losing the comp pick. As somebody else suggested a few weeks ago, trade our guys for elite talent and sign somebody back to take their place. We can compete quicker that way.

Just like Peraza was a year ago? If we move Simmons then that's yet another position that we have to hope gets filled by someone in the minors. If Simmons wasn't signed for those two extra years at such a team friendly deal then I would be more inclined to move him. But trading him now hurts the teams chances of trying to compete in 2017 if that is still the intended goal.

Chris Davis is going to get a mega deal. Something I don't see the Braves doing and something they shouldn't do.

agreed. We are at the point where we should be looking to trade for players like Simmons, not trade them.

I can't think of a player in baseball that has an easier path to 4 wins than him because his defense is a guaranteed to be elite. He may not be able to give you more than that because of his offense, but we are talking about someone that everyone says is better than Ozzie Smith with the glove.

I don't like these rumors at all.

I agree that we have all the leverage and can be choosy but I wouldn't outright reject all the offers. There could be teams in love with Simmons and who make great offers but make other arrangements when turned down.

The Braves need to determine what they want for Simmons and stick to it. If they get it, fine. If they don't, fine.

Going off Hart and Coppy's past logic, I'm afraid we will choose the quickest deal in which a team throws together a package of 3 arms, 1 of which is highly touted, but has had or will need TJ surgery in the near future.

Again, I only trade Simba if it's a MONSTER deal. If not, don't do it. There is literally no NEED to do so. It's just more of a "what the hell," type of move.
