Simmons dealt to Angels for two top pitchers, Aybar

Bc once again we traded for pitching and more pitching. If you're gonna trade something trade pitching not your cheap SS. And right now why would Miller sign an extension here?? Thought so.

Pretty much. What did we lose? A 3-4 WAR player signed at below market prices for 5 more years. The real question you should ask is. What did we gain? More pitching. The state of our position players at not only the MLB but the overall org is at a very bad place.

I'm not going to pretend to be excited about this deal, but Newcomb is a perfectly acceptable return for Simmons. I think we get too caught up in trading for hitting right now, when what the FO is doing primarily is acquiring long-term assets. If Newcomb does become a top flight SP and some others do as well, then we will sort out the pitching vs. hitting.

Idk if this says more about him or our farm, but:

Baseball America's John Manuel tells me Newcomb will move into No. 1 prospect slot with #Braves

Honestly, both. He's got game, but you'd think with all the trade we made we'd have secured a top 10 prospect.

I 100% understand complaining about the full package we got....I expected/wanted a bat. But nobody can argue how sexy Newcomb is. The dudes going to be an ace

"Top prospect" is all relative. Another goddamn disaster. Can't wait for clvclv to come tell us what the front office told him today.

No need. Glad to get the mention though. Don't know anyone in the front office (or even any of their 7th or 8th third cousins as far as I know unlike several people around who purport to KNOWING anything). Did have 2 of the 3 names right BTW - knew Richards was a pipe dream, but it never hurts to ask (or hope).

Loved seeing that Coppy told the Mutts they'd have to give up Harvey or DeGrom.

Of all the trades we've made over the past few years, even the ones where most hate the trade, there have always been at least a few that like the trade... until this one. I've not seen one post anywhere that even resembles even just disliking this trade. 100% of the posts have hated this one. It is simply that bad. Unbelievable.

Well, Angels fans aren't happy either, fwiw.

If he can stay healthy. And there's the matter of gaining control. He's been devestating to hit (11.1 K/9) but wipes out a chunk of that by walking almost 5 batters per 9. Assuming in the bigs that hitters get called tighter zones, are more talented and have better discipline in general, you'd think that gap would close for the worse without a clear improvement in control from him. Which I hope we get because his stuff is filthy.

I'm disappointed we didn't get a cornerstone major leaguer but any team that's selling theirs is unlikely to be buying ours.

I love Newcomb. Let me put it this way about him: If he was our pitching prospect and we had developed him and we were trading him for Simmons, a lot of people here would be really, really angry. This kid is a stud. Big, strong, hard throwing lefties with great stuff are hard to find. We're clearly trying to assemble our own rotation like the Mets have. Can't say I disagree with that philosophy.

I'm not excited about Ellis. Probably best suited for the pen for us.

So I hate this like I hated the Oliver's deal.
Olivera in lf is worse.

I am assuming this trade says
1. We are trying to be like the mets but without the hitting of cue speeds and at c
2. They think that albies defensively will be a top ten ss next year with an upgrade on offense

I know a lot of ppl will say trade miller an ff... But we have to have someone in 2017. If they trade those guys they will need to come out and say 2020 is the goal.

I say trade aybar. He's a decent player. Eat his salary and get a better player. Flip him to the padres with bethancourt for their top catching prospect.

We will be bad next yr

Put jade at ss and Oliver's at 2b. Why not?

Now that I've had a chance to read more about Newcomb and Ellis, like this a bit better. Ellis looks solid. In the same zip code as Jenkins and Banuelos. I like that neither guy needs to hold a 40-man spot until they're ready in 2017 or so.

It's still in the Olivera zone for me though. I would not have made the trade if I were the Braves, but I'm not devastated by it. There's a chance the Braves will win this trade long term, but it's more likely that the Angels win the trade.

Will miss watching Simmons for sure. I expect him to be a steady contributor for the Angels . . . 2.5 - 3.5 WAR per year. Would be surprised if he breaks out offensively.

We have the #3 pick which will probably be a pitcher (I'm ok with that), if Sims has another really good year and all of these pitchers step up we could trade for somebody like Arenado next your season bc even the Johns know we can't keep em all. Newcomb is rated higher by prospects ratings go so I have no problem with him being #1. So how much money will we have to spend next offseason? It's gotta be a ton at this point.
