Shelby Miller Traded To The Cubs [FALSE ALARM]

They are one of the better fits IF you are willing to take minor league talent back (and the Braves really should since they aren't going to be good no matter in 2016). If you could get 2-3 of Bregman, Cameron, Tucker, Reed, Fisher, Kemp and Davis you would be crazy not to make that move...

I doubt Bregman, Cameron, and Tucker are available. You don't see teams trade away first round picks within the same year very often.

Man, did I ever have a man-crush on Javier Vazquez, I wanted him on the team for year's....only to finally see him in a Braves uniform and dominate, and then basically traded in a salary dump for the great Melky Cabrera. But, hey we had Kensin Kawakami! What a waste of resources. To think about it, that 2010 rotation would have been nasty with Javy in it.

Reed would be blocked by Freeman, so that would create another problem.. one I know your answer too.. but I digress.. I like JD Davis, Kemp, Cameron.

alex B. creates issues with Ozzie, but you might be able to move one to second if you didn't get that covered in the trade.

We don't value defense it appears, so we could just put Reed at third base. It can't be that hard to throw left handed across the diamond, now, can it? If you got the arm all you have to do is the spin! He could be like the left handed version of Scott Rolen, a MLB first! It would be marketing genius, everyone would show up to the park to watch this like Bill Veek's White Sox promotions.

The Braves need to make trades for where they want to be not where they are.

As an example, let's look at the rumored Arizona trade that the Braves wanted. Miller for Pollock. Pollock has three years of service time. The Braves stated goal was to be good in 2017 and beyond. In 2017 he will have 5 years service time. Let's say through arby he goes to $4M for the 2016 season (which he should get) and he blossoms into a superstar and progresses and maintains. Then into 2017 he's making $8M, going into 2018 he's making $16M. Then he's either a FA where if you want to keep him he's a $25M plus player per year OR you lock him up before FA, where even at a team friendly number he's a $20M guy. And he's still just one guy. Let's say he doesn't become a star and is just "good" then you have traded a "good" SP for a good bat, essentially exchanging problems.

Would the addition of Pollock and subtraction of Miller make the 2016 (or even 2017) team any more competitive at this point? The obvious answer is no. So, then why do it.

The trade to make is one for quantity AND quality, and you need them to be minor league guys that are 1-3 years away but no further than 4. That way, just as those traded for guys start hitting the ML level, you're acquired pitching depth is ripening also. All that talent is relatively cheap which allows you to fill any holes as are found in 2017, 2018 and beyond with outside talent.

Whatever we trade Miller for I want atleast 3 prospects back. No more of this trading 4 players for a prospect or a high qyuality player for a prospect 1 for 1. Thats not how this is supposed to work. High quality MLB players should bring back atleast 3-4 prospects. If we trade Miller for Baez 1 for 1 and Baez isnt phenomenal we lose that trade badly. Atleast if its Baez and 3 marginal prospects theres the possibility one or more of those marginal prospects help the MLB team at some point.

I think Miller's value for us is peak right now.

If we hold onto him, next year he could be great but have 1 less year of control to any interested teams and it would have been a waste on the 2016 braves. GMs know miller had a greatseason (hope they don't care about w-l). This is the highest his value will be.

HEYMAN: dodgers, nl west rivals talking to marlins about jose fernandez; things starting to percolate.

From the Marlin's perspective, why? From my perspective, good, get him the hell out of the NL East. That guy is a walking no hitter everytime he takes the mound against our crappy lineup.

If we do a package with the Sox it could end up being a big deal with a lot of moving parts. They don't seem to have the one player outside of Betts who matches up with Shelby.

Assuming earlier reports about the Braves wanting an MLB pitcher to replace Miller's innings plus a near-MLB ready position player are correct, the BoSox match up very well. They have a glut of MOR type guys they could pair with any one or two of a number of very good young position players, including Moncada, JBJ, Betts, Benintendi, and Swihart.

We have seen the BoSox make a huge deal to sign Price and unload great prospects for Kimbrel, so there's no reason to think they would hesitate to pay a premium for Miller.

Good point. It's pretty obvious that the FO has a huge boner for Pollock, much like they did for Hector. But we got to be extremely careful here, while, he's a very good player I don't consider him cornerstone type talent, and with his service time Miller is worth more. And we need to be extremely careful in this case with a player like Pollack who appears to have figured it out and going forward could be an elite player, but at the same time we thought the same thing when we acquired Nate McClouth, and we all know how that ended up....not well at all. I'm not saying that Pollack will end as badly as McClouth, again he may have figured it out, but he is a similiar type player at this stage of the game and players in a much friendlier home field as well as division.

Wouldn't mind seeing something with Benintendi involved. That's the Hog homer in me talking though.

Benintendi and Brian Johnson for Shelby would make loads of sense IMO. Johnson could step into the rotation to "replace" Shelby now (and give us a lefty that we won't have unless Banuelos cracks it), and Benintendi potentially puts himself on the fast-track this season. You'd then be in position to start shopping Markakis next winter as a substantially more affordable alternative to Joey Bats or Jay Bruce. With Bourn and Swisher off the books, you could revisit a Wieters signing if he has a bounce back season in 2016. Trade Julio for Ryan McMahon and you could be looking at opening the new park with...

CF- Smith, LF- Olivera, 1B- Freeman, C- Wieters, RF- Benintendi, 3B- McMahon, SS- Aybar (qualifying offer to bridge to Albies), 2B- Peterson

Newcomb, Sims, Johnson, Wisler, Jenkins/Folty/Banuelos

I disagree. Pollock is better than Miller, so that would be a good trade in the sense that we would be getting better and could at some point flip Pollock for even more than we could get for Shelby.

But I do agree that I'd rather use Miller to get multiple long-term pieces.

I like your thought process here, but we would need to get more than just McMahon for Teheran. And man, that rotation would be all kinds of iffy.
