Who should our next manager be?

I don't think our FO is that stat driven.

Coppy's deal is supposed to be a fusion of stats and scouting. JS and Cox are not stat heads by any means. I don't think Hart is a saber guy.

Honestly I don't think teams need managers. I think they mostly get in the way. FO should be able to set the line up. Pitching coach can make the pitching changes. Bench coach can make adjustments, hit and run, etc. Managers mostly just talk to the media.

I hope they aren't that stat driven. I also don't buy the idea that a team doesn't need a manager. IMO, the front office has no business trying to dictate what is done on the field. Their responsibility is to get players. Period.

I should add that I really like what I read about David Ross, but I also really like the idea of Eddie Perez getting the job. I think the Braves have a potential star manager right under their noses in Eddie.

Last time I checked, that "plucky middle infielder" (Beckham) that's hitting second happens to be the hottest hitter on the team outside of Frenchy. I have no idea if he'd be hitting there if Bobby were the manager, but I'm willing to bet that's the furthest thing from Snitker's mind when he makes the lineup card out.

Leading my short list is Bud Black and Eddie Perez. I'm intrigued a bit about the Mark DeRosa idea. I've also heard Dave Martinez's name mentioned.

Let me throw a name against the wall that hasn't been discussed, but I'm coming up with an idea: Dave Righetti. I have no idea if he would be interested, but if so, he might be a worthwhile call. Knows pitching and you know he's probably picked up some things from Bruce Bochy.

A few reasons.

First, he has done the job in the winter leagues and won a championship as a winter league manager. He was specifically targeted for the Tigres team by team president Carlos Guillen as well. This is in one of the top winter leagues out there with some of the best competition.

Second, he gives credit to Bobby Cox for being his mentor and wants to be a manager like Bobby. That may not mean much to some, but to me, it means a lot. Bobby is one of the best managers in the history of the game and had unprecedented success while at the helm. We would be very lucky to get someone who is similar to Bobby Cox as a manager.

I guess I'm just not seeing in Bud Black what others are seeing. To me, there is marginal difference between Bud and Fredi at this point. Neither manager could get the most out of talented yet flawed rosters. I'd much rather give someone who hasn't been a failed manager a chance to do the job.

I really dont understand why people want Bud Black here. I agree with KB21, Black has already failed with a young team. I would love Showalter, Chipper, could we pry Scoscia from the Angels after this season? Eddie Perez wouldnt be my top choice, but i'd rather have him than Bud Black

He didn't manage in the era that incorporated the advanced metrics utilized today, but Cox did a lot more with stats and match-ups than most guys. Again, it was a different era in many respects, but there's somehow this notion that Bobby just went with his gut all the time. He used platoons extensively in Toronto.

Better not sleep on Brian Snitker keeping the job at this point. This team is playing much better under him than they did under Fredi. They are currently 7-8 under Snit with two good wins against the Giants. The young pitchers are throwing well under him, and he is starting to get some young arms healthy in the pen. These players fight for that guy.

I think they may be intrusive at some level, but I agree that there's this unfounded notion that the entire organization is based on WWBD and WWJSD. Coppolella has been a whirling dervish of sorts with a passel of moves (a number of which are confounding) and has been about as non-JS as they come.

Why does anybody assume that Chipper would be a decent candidate to manage? He's got zero experience. Ryne Sandberg, Cubs legend, had extensive experience managing through the minors, then got turned down for their job before get hired with the Phillies.

Great players seldom make good managers. There are exceptions, but I don't think Chipper is the guy for the job.
