DRAFT IN PROGRESS THREAD ... What's past is preamble

That certainly is an apologist view of the situation. The likely scenario is the simplest one. We drafted a guy we knew we could sign cheap and who we liked well enough. We did this to try to snag one or two of the elite talents that often fall in the draft. We traded for another pick to help this plan.

This year we don't have anyone who fell.

We took a risk by drafting Anderson and hoping someone fell. The risk didn't pay off. It sucks. It's not a risk I take with the third pick but one o can at least understand.

I honestly think these things are often far less set in the minds of FO people than they are for fans. Meaning, I truly believe that most of the time a FO makes decisions they think are the best with several scenarios in mind, and if their ideal scenario doesn't happen, they don't worry too much, they just move onto the next one...especially in baseball. I don't think the Braves decided to forego a top 5 talent so they could try to get one later. I think they really like Anderson, saw an opportunity to take him for less than slot, and gave themselves flexibility later.

They will almost certainly use that flexibility somehow. It may not be in the way they ideally envisioned, but I can assure you they're not panicking. They knew everything that's happened was a possibility.

I don't think their belief in Anderson at 3 was contingent on getting one of a few players at 40 or 44.

Its not about "elite" players. There really arent any in the this draft. Its about drafting as many good players as possible. We dont have to spend that extra slot money on 1 pick. It could be used to buy out 5-6 players that have strong college commitments that fall in the draft for that reason. Theres plenty of good major league players drafted past the first round.

If we get Trammell/Wentz or Trammell/Hudson or something like that, that's a really, really successful first 3 picks, imo.

Trammel, Nolan Jones and Wentz are top 25 guys still available. If the Braves end up with 2 of them at 40/44 I can get on board with Anderson at #3.

I am about 99% certain our #40 pick will be Joey Wentz and he will sign for about 1 million over slot. BA scouting report says he didnt give up a hit until his 5th start of the season and allowed 1 hit in his first 30 innings.

Dude can rake, too. Could let him hit if he struggles on the mound.

You would have to think Trammell has fallen due to a deal with a team at this point. The question is whether it's us, Cincy at 35, or LA at 36...

I understand completely and see where you're coming from. Let me add this about Anderson and the pick, and let me state I'm only a High School Pitching Coach so take what I say however you like...

The top 3 high school pitchers (and overall really as I'm not sold on Puk) are in my opinion:

1. Jason Groome

2. Ian Anderson

3. Riley Pint

Of those three I'd rather have Anderson simply because of his delivery and his ability to repeat it, where the other two (especially Pint) can have a tough time doing so. In Groome's case he's just like Touki, in that he struggles to command the arm side with the fastball. To me, these three are very similar and will all three become #2/#3 type pitchers. Add in the fact Anderson was willing to sign below slot it seems like the perfect fit.

Man, reading this thread is a buzz kill. The characteristics of the draft have been the dearth of elite-level talent and the excess of solid, not elite, players. If #13 and #3 are roughly the same but one is far cheaper, go with the cheaper one and save your pennies for later in the draft. It's common sense in a system that is a crapshoot.

That being said, please go watch Ian throw. It'll make you feel better. That is the easiest, smoothest delivery from a high school kid I've seen all night. The only one close to him is Groome, who is not a slam dunk ace.

I think many of y'all are confusing the MLB draft for the NFL draft. It doesn't matter who we pick, you won't see them for years and there's a solid chance they'll never amount to much.

Relax. Enjoy the draft and the weekend.

This is exactly what I mentioned earlier, glad to see someone agrees!! Welcome aboard bud!

Just another example the Cardinals pick in the 30's someone BA has in the 90's and Mayo doesnt even have ranked. Rankings vary a lot in MLB draft rankings. Thats why its absurd to complain about where MLB.com ranks the players.

Cardinals probably had a deal in place with him for over slot, which is why they took such a big 'reach' the pick before.

I like it for him, great pitching organization.
