Swanson getting the call...

This had to be the plan all along. Swanson has been getting a lot of days off lately and it's likely to make sure he's fresh

The issue is less about the lost year of control and more the fact we are promoting a prospect because the FO decided to rather than the player showing he is ready. Dansby has been fairly average overall at AA and been very poor the past month and a half (hitting .250 with an OPS right at .700). Promoting a guy who is struggling at AA to the majors is just a dumb move period.

Exactly. That is what I was calling moronic.

Yeah, that's the first thing I thought of when I saw this announcement. The mysterious days off in recent weeks are now making sense. We executed to the baseline plan. Readiness of the player was not the primary factor.

People spazzing out over the greatest prospect of all time being called up to the majors?!! He is amazing and is a can't miss player. At least that's what I have been told.

No, it wasn't. This is PR as much as anything, but I can see the reasoning behind it.

Maybe not the greatest of all time, but certainly top 5 and a HOF lock. If Crawford or Russell want to start at the ASG, they better go to the AL. With Swanson, we're a lock for a 100 wins next season. Chipper will be wanting swanson's autograph soon

Or maybe our scouts and staff who watch him every day know a little bit more about if he's ready than a bunch of wannabe GM's on a message board that have watched a game here or there and a handful of at bats on YouTube?

Hmm, I wonder if you were making the same type comments back in 2011-2014 when people like myself were being annoyed by the FO's drafts and moves. The wannabe GMs were definitely right back then, using the same logic we are right now. Just because a person runs a baseball team doesn't mean they aren't capable of royally screwing up, and acting like they have some sort of immunity from critique because of their job is straight out idiotic and lazy logic.

I would never make any claims to scouting better than our scouts, but I don't need to when simple common sense applies.

He wasn't going to have to be on the 40 man. Now he will.

His clock shouldn't have started until sometime mid next season, regardless of how well he's playing (which can be unpopular with the player and their agent except for the fact that the Braves are covered in that he hasn't played that well to earn a call up). This move will likely end up costing the Braves several million dollars and a year of control and that's IF he doesn't flame out from being rushed.

And all for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON. Even if you buy in that 2017 will be a competitive year (what flavor cool aide do you prefer?), calling Swanson up now serves NO PURPOSE.

It's a foolish, foolish move from an asset management POV and a team building POV.

What's your definition of ready? Stats are only a portion of the overall.

Performing well at the level he is playing at, showing consistent improvement. Rather than consistently going in the opposite direction like Dansby has the past couple months. I think he'll be fine defensively, and I don't think he has the mentality that he's going to be hurt by struggling badly, but you never know with that. Lets get real here though, nobody supporting this move has any reasons to support why he should be up now, they just are blindly supporting the move because the FO is doing it.

That's certainly why I'm supporting it. I've only seen a few MBraves' games, so it would be hard to say I know more than our FO when all I know is found in a boxscore

I honestly don't know but I bet it will be significantly better than Aybar

I dunno. I think the FO must think he's ready, and think--with reason--that he's equipped to handle success or failure. Still, though...

A 65 WRC+ isn't a high bar, but this is a kid who isn't exactly lighting up AA.

Yeah, this.

So does Swanson have to be on the 40 man roster at the end of the year? I know they have some decisions to make on the 40 man, so my question is does this add another man that will require another guy to be left unprotected.

Yes, and like a few of us are saying, that's the real downside to the move. I'm not all that bent out of shape on the "ready/not ready" question. My guess is he'll do fine. The bigger issue, at least to me, is that he takes up a 40-man roster spot that could go to someone else. We have so many impending free agents that we won't be bringing back, so there may be plenty of room, but if they have to pass on a reasonable FA because they don't have a spot on the 40-man roster to absorb the signing, this will have turned out to be a goofy move.
