Red Sox Aquire Sale

Im not sure how people are saying it was low. There was a monster bidding war for Sale, that implies other teams would not offer what the Red Sox offered.

B/c the package is Moncada and some stuff. Kopech is a name with legit fastball who is close. But I read people thinking he's likely a RP. He had the doping suspension. I'd rather have Newcombe or Folty. Def Folty.
Then they got some flier guys.

To me this is mostly Sale for Moncada. And I think that is a fair deal. I was expecting a massive overpay. I was thinking someone cleans out much of the farm.

I thought for Sale they'd have to give up two of Benenintendi/Moncada/Devers/Groome.

I think Moncada is a star. But I know Sale is.

I don't think the White Sox win this unless Moncada is a super star or they get big time production from one other piece.

Of course the other way to look at it is if the White Sox think their window is 2+ years down the line then they trade a star now for a star later.

The pitcher they got seems like he has a good shot of being a RP.

I think this deal is low. And the Sox are ready to win now, so I like it for them.

If the Sox sell this low on Sale can we get any other pieces on sale?

Yes but the White Sox are rebuilding... so it makes complete sense for them.

Abreu. No.

Eaton. Probably not.

Frazier. Maybe?

Melky. No.

Quintana. No the rotation is chalk full of studs already.

Moncada is the number 1 prospect in baseball. Kopech is going to move up the charts after his numbers last year. There is no one that could have offered a player like Moncada.

I agree. Said so in the winter meetings thread.

But the WS didn't have to trade him. I would have held out for 2 of their big 4. You could always deal him at the deadline or the next year (yes he could get hurt). To me this is almost Sale for Moncada. I just don't believe in Kopech with his history and his delivery. I think he's a RP.

I think it's a solid deal for both. I just expected a bigger package.

Only comparable scenario would be the Astros offering Bregman.

They already had 3 teams bidding on him and had a good idea what the 3 teams would offer. They had the opportunity to get possibly a franchise changing prospect; dick around too much and it may fall apart.

True.
Nobody is saying the deal wasn't fair. Or that they should have taken another deal.

I just think a lot of ppl thought they'd get more. People were talking about Betts or other players already in MLB. Moncada is a stud. But it's like trading him to the dodgers for Seager and some stuff. But Seager has actually done it at the MLB level.

Again, that was the type of deal ppl on this board wanted for Tehran + Viz. Now I know that is message board BS, but if Sale was a Brave we'd have wanted Moncada + a lot more. That's all I'm saying.

Now the socks are clearly in rebuild mode....What does Quintana cost?

If I'm your nats I'm seeing if I can get Quintana for Golito. Maybe you can get McCutchen and Quintana for the price you were willing to give up for Sale. Might be better off that way.

Moncada's the centerpiece and while there's no sure thing among prospects, he projects extremely well. I'd guess easily a 20/20 guy and maybe a 30/30 guy. For the Red Sox' sake, I hope their throwback uniforms aren't hideous.

Considering the Red Sox paid $63 million to acquire Moncada in the first place then in one way you could say they are paying over 33 million per year for Sale plus the additional prospects they gave up.

Not sure about Moncada... I mean he did hit .211 last season for the BoSoxs.

And that would have been a great return for Sale.

Agreed. The reason I never thought Sale would happen is all of the talk about "emptying the farm" and it would take 4 of your top 10 prospects. I actually thought that's about what it would take. I also assumed those players would be closer to major league ready and more sure things.

The White Sox were focused on the stud and upside wild cards. They got what they wanted. Maybe the plan is to use the other trade bait to get more reliable players who are closer to major league ready, now that they've got their new stud.

This deal is clearly just the first of a series of deals. Clearly Boston is going to flip Sale to the Braves for the package clv detailed in his informative blog.
