Braves sign John Danks

It's a minor league deal per Jeff Passan.

Any relation to Claire Danes?

Almost wanted to keep the original thread title to see how many jokes would ensue...

No issue with the move.

There is 0% chance it hurts you and a non-zero percent chance it helps you.

This. If nothing else, we seem to have an opening in the AAA rotation, and Danks is only a year removed from a perfectly decent season. I'd be as happy with him in the rotation as Dickey in all likelihood.

A "perfectly decent season" is quite the overstatement. I mean, I don't care about the deal, ts fine for AAA depth, but he hasn't had a decent season since 2011.

So Plan B after Sale for the box marked "Obtain ace from White Sox" was John Danks. The plan is now all revealed.

I kid, I kid. No harm in these types of flyers.

His 2015 season was fine for a back-end guy. I'd probably be happy if Dickey or Colon put up those numbers this year for us.

We do?

Collmenter, Wisler, Blair, Newcomb, Sims, Biddle.

I mean, there's little harm in the signing, but is there really that much of a need to put that many more arms ahead of Weigel and Fried as #12 and #13 on the organizational depth chart? Especially when you just added Sims and Fried to the 40-Man Roster. That's just a little too deep IMO.

If they want a lefty in the rotation that bad in 2017, just bite the bullet and go on and trade for Quintana.

It's not even the first of the year, and you're acting as if the AAA rotation is set. Danks is OK for minor league mentor/occasional call-up. At least one of that group will get hurt or traded.

I told you guys that there will be a retread in Gwinnett. As usual, nobody listened. You all act as if only prospects constitute these roster spots. That's not how it works.

Collmenter doesn't qualify as a retread???

Depth guys like Danks - as your #8/#9/#10 SP - will be all over come March.

You'll have to make another move to clear room for Danks to put him on the 40-Man Roster if you have to go that deep - what are the chances you'd cut someone instead of just putting Collmenter, Wisler, Blair, Sims, or Fried in the rotation for a couple of starts? If you get that far down, what do you think the chances are that Danks is a better option than Newcomb if you're going to remove someone from the roster?

I'm assuming Collmenter will be the swing man in the bullpen and don't think you can count on Biddle enough to not look for more depth. None of those players would ultimately block any of our prospects like Fried or Weigel if it comes to that.
