GDT 5/1/17: Braves vs. MUTTS

i don't believe this to be true. many or most stadiums being built are being placed in locations that are very beneficial to the areas surrounding the stadium and have long reaching effects.

in this case the only people who benefit are the oil companies and the braves. instead of integrating with the community, they're just starting their own community and taking it all.

but it will fail in the end. getting to and from the stadium will be too difficult over time and there is no reason to go out there aside from the game. when you have stadiums downtown you have so many more reasons to bring people out. in atlanta's case the big draw aside from the stadium is a waffle house.

Correct, this will benefit the Braves...who built it. Yes, they got Cobb County to pony up some money. The county didn't have to do that, but they did. Why would the Braves turn it down?

And the fact that you think no one will go there except to watch a game means you haven't gone and have no idea what else is being put in there. It will be one of the top places in and around the city, if not the top place, to go hang out and spend most of a day, game or not.

Turner Field was the exact kind of place you're describing. It did nothing to help the areas surrounding the stadium, and no one had any reason to be there more than 10 minutes before or after a game. SunTrust is much, much, much, much better than Turner in location, surrounding area, things to do, and revenue for the Braves.

"Some" money. Tee hee. Your interpretation of that deal is interesting.

You think the Braves would have made the move if CC hadn't paid for more than half of the stadium?

No, I don't think they would have. But Cobb County did. Again, how is that the Braves' fault?

Cobb County should benefit, but if they don't, that's on Cobb County. The Braves will absolutely benefit. And what is wrong with that?

Because, like most public financing deals for pro sports stadiums, it was a bad deal for the community negotiated by a small coterie of officials and never subjected to any real public test. I'm against those deals in principle--it has nothing to do with the Braves--so I see no reason to cheer for this one.

This is a Braves message board, so I assumed we were just discussing it from the Braves' perspective. From their vantage point, it is clearly a success.

Chip also suggested that it will be a failure. There is very, very little chance of that from the Braves' perspective.

Sure, it probably will be. Public risk for private profit usually works that way.

As for the Battery, it'll be good for the Braves, but I to say that it'll become a premiere destination in Atlanta sounds massively hyperbolic to me.

Where else is there one location with that much to offer? The Roxy, Antico, Fox Bros, Sports & Social, Wahlburgers, Yard House, Punch Bowl Social, H&F Burger, Burn, and a bunch of other places to eat/shop, etc. I mean, how many places around the city can rival that? I think I'm going to prefer it to a place like Ponce City Market.

Nah, it really will, 'cuz the rest of Atlanta is a ****hole.

Disclosure/Disclaimer: I left Atlanta a few years ago and my ex-wife lives there still. Pretty sure that colors my thinking. I don't even connect planes at Hartsfield.

Sounds like you have a special case of ex-Bravesitis.

It's true. I'm entitled.

I was trying to set up Enscheff with my ex. That would have been great, especially if they'd gone postal at the same time and offed each other. Alas, he already had his own psycho picked out.
