i don't believe this to be true. many or most stadiums being built are being placed in locations that are very beneficial to the areas surrounding the stadium and have long reaching effects.
in this case the only people who benefit are the oil companies and the braves. instead of integrating with the community, they're just starting their own community and taking it all.
but it will fail in the end. getting to and from the stadium will be too difficult over time and there is no reason to go out there aside from the game. when you have stadiums downtown you have so many more reasons to bring people out. in atlanta's case the big draw aside from the stadium is a waffle house.
Correct, this will benefit the Braves...who built it. Yes, they got Cobb County to pony up some money. The county didn't have to do that, but they did. Why would the Braves turn it down?
And the fact that you think no one will go there except to watch a game means you haven't gone and have no idea what else is being put in there. It will be one of the top places in and around the city, if not the top place, to go hang out and spend most of a day, game or not.
Turner Field was the exact kind of place you're describing. It did nothing to help the areas surrounding the stadium, and no one had any reason to be there more than 10 minutes before or after a game. SunTrust is much, much, much, much better than Turner in location, surrounding area, things to do, and revenue for the Braves.
