We were never all that interested in college pitchers during the JS era (and we brought back a lot of the draft/player development folks from those days after firing Wren, right?). From 91-2006, the only college pitchers we took in the first round were Dan Meyer and Joey Devine. That changed a bit when Wren took over (Minor, Gilmartin, Hursh). I don't know to what extent that was philosophy - we famously preferred high schoolers in the JS era - and to what extent it was circumstance - the elite college pitchers were generally all gone by the time we were drafting in those days, and one presumes we would have been more than happy to take Mark Prior if he was available to us.
I'm not sure how that would affect our view of Wright, who I would love at #5, even with my general preference for a bat. But using a high pick on a college arm generally isn't The Braves Way (TM).
