Callis:

Pretty decent chance, based on information at this moment, @Braves could get Wright at No. 5 in @MLBDraft.

That would be pretty awesome. Though I'd be fine with any of Wright, Gore, Beck, or Lewis. Be really nice if Wright or Gore drop to us though.

I do wish he had better control as college junior, that seems worrisome to me and none of the secondary pitches seem like killers.

He has a BB9 rate of 2.61 per, what exactly are expecting a college junior to be putting up for a walk rate?

I like the high-floor with Wright, no injury concerns, big build, four pitches.

He's the one that put on all the muscle and popped his fastball 2-3 miles per hour isn't he?

This is hardly scientific, but is there a single (former) Vanderbilt pitcher who currently doesn't have or is just getting over arm trouble?

I don't get why anyone would be reluctant to take Wright. He is legit superstar ace potential in every scouting report I can find with a potential for up to 4 plus pitches (offspeed still a work in progress but shows feel). The biggest concern I have is a report that said his arm action is similar to Strasburg when you watch close... so there could be elbow scare potential down the road. (Was from an unnamed Twins scout). But right now he looks durable and has already had quite a large work load in a season. He threw over 110 pitches in one complete game shut out. Some reports say he still has room to improve velocity which is unusual for most college pitchers. He could conceivably be ready to slot into the rotation in 1-2 years depending on his performance.

David Price, I think. At least not at Vandy.

But the truth is a lot of college guys get there with arm trouble.

To be fair, part of the reason they're experiencing arm trouble is because they've stayed in the league so long. Everybody goes through it after enough time. I'll take Price/Gray/Minor for track record.

New Callis article calling McKay the favorite at 1-1 and some other stuff: http://m.mlb.com/news/article/23545...n-mckay-favorite-to-go-1st/?topicid=151437456.

He said it's believed that Rays and Braves have McKay at the top of their boards. He also adds that Wright "might not quite be the best prospect available in the eyes of the Padres (No. 3), Rays or Braves, depending on how the Draft unfolds."

Im done believing anything until Monday. There is no way we wouldn't take Wright if he magically fell to us.

We were never all that interested in college pitchers during the JS era (and we brought back a lot of the draft/player development folks from those days after firing Wren, right?). From 91-2006, the only college pitchers we took in the first round were Dan Meyer and Joey Devine. That changed a bit when Wren took over (Minor, Gilmartin, Hursh). I don't know to what extent that was philosophy - we famously preferred high schoolers in the JS era - and to what extent it was circumstance - the elite college pitchers were generally all gone by the time we were drafting in those days, and one presumes we would have been more than happy to take Mark Prior if he was available to us.

I'm not sure how that would affect our view of Wright, who I would love at #5, even with my general preference for a bat. But using a high pick on a college arm generally isn't The Braves Way (TM).

The Braves never had a college arm this good fall to them. Most of the good college pitching prospects are gone by the 25th-30th pick. Mostly low ceiling back of the end rotation guys. While there are plenty of good High school arms and bats available.

They also drafted College Outfielder Mike Kelly with the 2nd pick in the draft in 1991. The only time the Braves picked in the top ten during that time period.
