Around the League: 2017 offseason edition / 2018 Season

JV lost the feel of his slider during all the time he was pitching through injuries. Midway through last year, he made some adjustments and it clicked. It was toward the tail end of his time with Detroit, so it looks like he suddenly turned it up, but that's not so.

Very good—but he improved every month of the year. He had a 4.73 era in his first 104.2 IP and a 1.95 era in his second 101.1 IP. He just had a bad first half—but his July was solid, as were his pre-trade August starts.

Player performance is volatile—especially pitchers’. Many more likely explanations exist than pouting or poor effort. Ascribing such volatility to the latter “causes”—especially absent any other evidence—is lazy narration.

Yeah, it wasn't like that at all. See above.

That’s exactly one of those “more likely explanations” I was imagining. Thanks.

I did think Verlander was a pretty good bet to rebound. I knew the Braves weren't going to get him but it was a fun hypo last year.

How much do you think the FO that trained AA would pay for a player AA doesn't think is good enough to start over Ryan Flaherty or Jose Bautista?

If that FO trained a guy that thought RF and Bautista were better 3b options, they may not be as smart as you think. I think AA has his first little crush as a Braves' GM like coppy did for olivera. This one at least will only cost us games and no real assets though

O...K...that is in no way addressing my comment...the point still stands...

The Dodgers don't want Camargo, regardless of how smart you think that point of view may be.

You’re really fired up about the Bautista thing.

Yankees may have lost Montgomery for a while. They are in all in mode so maybe they will overpay for a guy like Teheran.
