There are currently 91 qualified SPs.

Newk ranks #71 in percentage of strikes thrown. He is not good at throwing strikes, but we see him dominate aggressive lineups.

The scariest part for MLB, and the awesome part for us....

He ranks #6 in lowest contact rate on the strikes he does throw. When he does throw strikes, guys can't make contact.

Now imagine if he bumps that strike rate up without suffering an increase in contact rate...Can that be done? Does the lack of strikes thrown effect batters' ability to hit the strikes he does throw?

He has improved his BB rate to 4 per 9 this year. Is that good enough? Probably not, but it's certainly working so far. Are teams going to adjust and stop being so aggressive against him? Time will tell.

Teams will adjust. Newk has to be better at making more consistent pitches. He can’t keep going from 0-2 to 3-2 on a guy hitting .200.

he's 7th in the AL in fWAR.
i still don't really know what your point is. yeah, he's currently hitting above his head. the first month and a half of the season he's been really good.

All I said was he's currently playing at an MVP level. Do you disagree with that or not? I don't really see what your point is regarding Trout and Betts being in the same league. How does that change how Simmons has played so far or what type of player he is if he is a good hitter.

that's not really what you said, but whatever. yes, if he keeps up a .360 BABIP he might possibly put up a 7+ WAR season and be an MVP candidate. however considering it's been less than a month and half and he's still only 7th in the AL in fWAR i would say it's not at all likely.

Pretty sure that's exactly what I said. Thanks for playing.

"if he's figured out how to be a good hitter he's an MVP candidate."
so, no.
so far he's been a great hitter. with a high BABIP that he won't sustain (sorry, i know you only like to bring up unsustainable stats when it supports your point). if he's merely "good," he won't put up a 7+ WAR season.
i guess asdrubal cabrera is an MVP candidate. and nick markakis. and tommy pham.

No. But they have played at that level to start the season. Which is the point that I was making in regards to Andrelton but I'm sure that you knew that. Simmons can be a WRC+ 120 hitter and be an MVP candidate with his defense so he can fall off a bit and still be in that class. Again, thanks for playing.

Finished 8th in MVP voting last year. I'd say he is a legit MVP candidate, even if he isn't likely to win with Trout and Ohtani on the same team with him.

Edit: thewupk apparently we had the same thought. Beat me by 3 minutes

Pretty much.

Simba as a league average hitter is all-star level as he showed last year with 5 fWAR. Simba has a good hitter (120~ range) is going to be 7+ WAR and is MVP level. What other players do or don't do don't matter.
