David Price expects to be dealt

David Price told reporters Wednesday night that he expects to be traded by the Rays this offseason.

And that also seems to be the expectation around the league. "It's not disappointing or anything like that," Price said. "This is a place I love to be. My teammates and everyone in the organization knows that. It's part of baseball and it's something I've seen go on, it's kind of something I somewhat prepared myself for." The ace left-hander is still two years away from free agency, so the cash-strapped Rays can -- and apparently will -- maximize their return package for him this winter.

Trade whatever you have to and get him and extend him.

Pros

He'd be a good Hudson replacement. He's fairly consistent and he throws a ton of innings. I'd imagine he'd be even better in the weaker NL East.

Plus hes a Braves fan.

depends on the price

as always

Agreed but this feels like the right move at the right time.

I could see a deal of Wood/CB/Sims as the basic structure of the deal or at least something to get them interested.

That's a steep price to pay, but you figure we have this 2 year window (after they, Heyward/Upton are free agents) to win right now, and Price fits right into that.

I think it's more likely the Braves sign Cano than trade for Price. And the odds of signing Cano are about 1%.

I'd love to have Cano, but he will be 31 in a few days.

...And he wants 305 million dollars.

I cant think of a single player who would interest the Rays to deal with Atlanta. Maybe Gattis. But like it or not, regardless of which camp you are in Gattis is going nowhere.

It will be interesting to see which mindset Wren adopts. Will he feel that he has a narrow window and push to win a title now? Go for it the way Schuerholz did at the end?

Or take the longer view and wait for potential homegrown power arms to develop? We have a number of young pitchers who could potentially become dominant? Teheran, Wood, Sims, Cabrera, Graham. Even Minor has some remaining upside and has a chance to turn into a Cliff Lee.

If Wren makes a big push for Price, we'll know that he's feeling that the time to win is now.

Yup, not only is his potential intriguing but he is one of the few marketable players on the team. The fans seem to love him.

Unless you have a $175M+ payroll, you do not buy or trade for an Ace. The Braves do not have the money to pay a FA Ace, and they can't waste the trade resources required to trade for an affordable Ace. Especially not when they have quality pitchers at every level of the organization already.

If the Braves are going to have a legit Ace then we are going to have to hope Teheran or Minor take the next step and become one (or two).

I agree. I also don't think Wren will mortgage the future to win now.

We can't know for sure what would have happened if we had not made the Teixeira and JD Drew trades. But I can't help but think it is quite likely we would have ended having much more post-season success if we has simply held on to the fruits of our farm system.

If Wren wants to take a flier on getting an Ace, all he needs to do is sign JJ and have everyone cross their fingers he can stay healthy.

If that is the price then it would have to be Heyward but I would ask for a window of time to discuss extension. If we can't extend Price then look elsewhere for an ace.

I would agree.

I wouldn't trade CB unless Mac was extended.

Josh Johnson is cooked.

As stated above, just gotta hope Julio and Minor develop into that.

I'd pack Gattis' bags for him. Ship him off to Tampa for Price and then put CB at catcher. We have more than enough offense on this team to sacrafice a bit for an ace. Then dump Uggla somewhere and get an obp machine at 2nd and we're ready to roll.

If the options for getting an ace are hoping JJ or Roy Halladay find it within themselves for a year, then let's just hope Minor and Julio trend closer to that level.

If I'm giving up what it will probably cost for Price, I want some time to talk extension.
