2018 Offseason And Targets

On the other hand, by the end of this season some of the prospects, probably even some we are counting on being able to use in trades to upgrade the team, will go down in value due to injuries or inability to adjust at higher levels. Someone will be the 2019 version of Kolby Allard.

The point being, some of these guys may provide more purchasing power right now than they will at the deadline or after the season.

some guys will also take a big step forward or a guy we hadn’t considered may break out. hard to worry too much about that

Agreed. I think you simply have to consider the prospects’ value now and gauge if there’s fair-value out there in a worthwhile acquisition. You can’t make a trade just because you’re worried a couple balloons might pop—especially if it’s an overpay.

(especially when you don’t know which ones will pop).

True, but all overpays don't necessarily have to be GROSS overpays. Bringing Nick back (even on a good deal) likely means you more or less HAVE TO make a deal for Realmuto or sign Marwin (at the very least) unless you're counting on a huge bounce back from Duvall if you expect to contend in 2019. Punting RF with Markakis likely doesn't improve the team enough even if you give the ABs there against lefties to Camargo and if the extra rest allows Nick to come closer to approximating his 2018 first half.

Maybe pairing Camargo, Duvall, or Riley with Markakis works out, but I sure wouldn't want to count on it.

I just keep thinking and hoping that AA has to have something bigger up his sleeve by settling to bring Neck back.

Mish said he thinks two top 100 gets it done, and thinks one of Riley or Anderson would be in it, not both. If Anderson is in the deal, he thinks it gets done, Anderson is my favorite prospect but if we can keep all of Riley, Pache and Waters, while getting JTR, thats a huge win for AA.

Mish thinks Realmuto is traded just before camp.

Pitchers/catchers report in a couple weeks, still some good FA's out there. Keuchel, Kimbrel, Harper, Machado, Marwin, Pollock, some others.

Baseball has to fix this, this is just bad.

Yeah something has to be done. This was the slowest offseason I’ve ever seen. A deadline needs to be put into place for the offseason.

I think the biggest problem is some players are stuck on years rather than AAV.

Like some players want 5-6 years but if i was a player, i'd take a shorter deal with higher AAV. Like say 5/220 for Harper/Machado, 3/60 for Kimbrel, etc. But this is probably worse than last year given this offseason has been anticipated for years and the two big fish are both still unsigned.

Some teams are gonna get some serious bargains if they keep waiting, because eventually players gonna have to sign to get to camp.

Just like I had a feeling Markakis would be signed after they splurged on JD, I have a feeling they will spend the rest of the money on a 2nd or 3rd tier BP arm.

I really don't see Harper or Machado getting 40 million a year. Baseball has an aging fanbase problem. TV bubble going to burst soon and decline. A few years ago Harper was talked about being the first 40 million a year player.

I just don't see it happening unless it's 3 years or less. Don't think anyone is going to give Harper or Machado 40 million AAV plus anything over 3 years.

Trout may be the person to get 40. He probably is good enough to get 50 AAV.

Giancarlo may be the last time in the near future we see a major deal in length and outrageous money.

He's pretty much scooped every major Marlins trade the last 2-3 years before anyone ever even mentioned the possibility so I highly doubt that

I rather trade Anderson than Riley, personally. Regardless, if we can make a deal like that it would be a big move by AA as you say.

I started coming to the board 2-3 times a day during WM. Then when the "thaw" talk began, upped to 4-5 times a day. After this quote from DOB, I'm back to 2 times a day just in case something does happen like the Fish finally talk specifics to the Braves on JTR trade.
