2018 Offseason And Targets

I think the fact AA spent $23M to push Camargo to the bench answers that question.

I don't think it's the same as "pushing to the bench" was several years ago. Don't you think it's realistic that Snit will pencil Camargo into the lineup at least 100 times this year as a starter? I expect him to get at least 450 PA including starts plus off the bench. If someone gets hurt, he'll probably qualify for BA and such (502 PA).

(I am thinking along the lines of Zobrist 2018 - 3.3 WAR.) Might AA be thinking he is a 3 WAR player in that mold?

Yeah or AA came from an org that saw two super subs get around 3 war each. (Taylor and Hernandez). I would not value Jogun any less than 2 wins per over the next five years. And that alone would value JTR.

It is curious. With what players have been signing for I think you have to lower JTRs surplus value. Its probably closer to 45 million.

So if the friars are in on Manny. Would a Wil Myers trade be intriguing? I think they would have to eat some future money. Sort of no for me really. Not sure I am a big Myers guy now.

Earlier talk said they were having issues financially, so it's at least a little funny to see them keep getting tied to big names. Even if they actually could afford Manny, their financial situation likely keeps them from eating enough money to make a deal for Myers very attractive on our end.

Padres have just jumped into the Machado sweepstakes. Maybe they will put on the pressure needed to get these deals done finally.

Baseball's problem is that everything takes so damn long. 4 hour games, 30 seconds between pitches, 15 minutes between each ball in play, months for FAs to sign, days for the draft, years for draftees to make it to the MLB level, and on and on.

Baseball is a patient person’s game, at all levels. Hard to square with instant gratification culture.

More from the Fat Man, MLBTR reports

MLB.com’s Mark Bowman writes in his latest Inbox column that the Marlins are still insisting that the Braves include one of their current position players in a trade for the All-Star catcher. So long as that continues to be the price, Bowman writes, it’s unlikely that the Braves will cave into the Marlins’ demands.

Fish are looking for a LH bat

Current position player who hits LH-- Freddie, Markakis, Inciarte, Mac I hadn't heard this demand before.

I don’t understand why the Marlins are insisting on players with service time already burned when they won’t be competitive for a while and won’t have the budget to extent/re-sign such players even when they might become competitive.

Sure, yes—but it wasn’t that long ago that the Braves targeted Jace Peterson and Mallex Smith (along with Fried) in the Justin Upton trade. The Smith issue was remedied somewhat when he was flipped for Gohara, but grabbing a couple more distant young players instead of low-ceiling but “advanced” Peterson would’ve been nice, given the Braves’ competitive window.

With their system bulging with talent like it is, it's obviously not going to take Miami long to become contenders again - of course they need MLB-ready pieces!!!

AA has completely failed this offseason IMO. Donaldson was a good pick up, but not enough to get us over the edge...

We won the damn division last season, but instead of making us better, we were stagnant...

Well i thought AA would be more aggressive but i it looks like AA wants to wait one more year before cashing in some chips at the poker table.

It sucks but i do get it.

Alex has no balls lol but the Padres are interesting. If they got JTR and Machado, they’d have a damn strong squad

Yup. He may have shot his load too early and is too scared to play ball and make a trade. Instead he’ll happily sit back with our thousand pitching prospects, no place to play them all, and not maximize the talent they could generate through a return of big league talent.

Well we dont really have the position talent to be dealing one away unless we signed one.

Dodgers unfortunately have the depth/money to. Not defending AA, but unless another outside move was made, and they want a position player in the deal.
