2018 Offseason And Targets

AA's playing the long game, while lot of teams inside the division are going all in prospect wise and money wise.

I’m ok with that. Kimbrel would help us though AND keep him away from the Phils . It would not really hurt us long term either. That’s a win/win.

If the Phillies get both Harper and Kimbrel, a disgruntled Braves fan base is only going to get grumpier.

I'm ok with our pen with/without Kimbrel, and i think Philly loses their 2nd and 3rd round picks if they signed both.

Still not sure it makes much baseball sense to sign Kimbrel given the nature of the position and the amount of pitching depth the Braves have. If it was no longer than 2 years with an option or 3 total years, i guess i wouldnt hate it given the Braves dont have much money committed (right now).

I wanted to gauge the interest of the board for a Buster Posey trade.

From my POV he would come very cheap in return talent due to his age (32) and the 3 years plus buyout to a tune of almost $70M that he's owed. Plus he is coming off off season hip surgery.

There's a chance that he's better over the next three years than JTR, albeit at a higher expected AAV comp.

He's much better defensively than JTR at least historically.

There's also a reasonable chance that he is on the early slope of a steep age and health related decline.

Everyone seems to forget Posey was a 2 WAR player even with the bum hip last year. 2 WAR put him in the top 10 at the position. I think Posey will come back strong this year but his days of being the best catcher are over. Posey would be a good player to have. Unfortunately, he is owed to much on his contract to ever be a Brave. If Posey comes back and is playing at a 2 to 3 WAR pace no way the Giants eat much of this salary.

I do expect the Giants to start a rebuild around the trade deadline. Posey will be their best trade piece. I think the PR would be better for the Giants to eat a big part of his salary so they can can get a top tier player for Posey.

Bumgarner Posey trade would be good, but San Fran still thinks they can compete...ha.

Padres have apparently made serious offers to both Machado and Harper.

The first check will "accidentally" be post dated April 2109.

Is it just me or does the Padres offering contracts over 200 million sound made up. Hope this makes makes the Phillies get even more stupid with their money.

I'd honestly rather the Phils spend and get Harper this year rather than Trout next year! There's s chance they still could sign Trout next season as well. Now that would be scary!

They have the financial means to land both but thats one expensive team in a few years.

And the team with the prospects seems hell bent on not trading any of them.

If the reported asking price for JTR from the Braves was Pache/Riley, Anderson, and a Wilson, Wright, Touki type as the 3rd piece, then i cant say im mad at AA for not going there. That's way too much.

Both Harper and Machado playing chicken cause they know Philly is desperate to sign one of them and is apparently willing to beat any offer.

Would be quite hilarious to see both players spurn Philly though.

The Faillies are sitting around 125 million. If they add 30 more for Harper then I can’t see them adding another big contract this year and still go after trout. I mean I guess they could but they are going to be struggling to afford pitching and role players. Like cheff said above. I see their competitive window being around 3 years and then things are going to get expensive. Especially with the farm not looking great right now.

Bc we would stay ahead of the Phillies. If the Phillies get Harper, they're most likely both better than us

I think we're on par with Philly even if they get Harper. If Washington kept Harper, they'd be by far the favorites in the division the next 2-3 years.

Arrieta will gone by then, they could afford a couple more big contracts by then.

Just reading again stuff on Twitter and Heyman saying Harper has multiple offers of $30 million a year for long term type contracts. I’m sorry, no athlete, no matter how talented is worth that much. If the Phillies are crazy enough to do that, they will pay for it after 2-3 years.

NBA players are getting 40-50 million AAV with how much the sport has grown. Baseball used to be the gold standard for pro athlete contracts, not anymore. It appears the bubble is bursting sooner than I imagined. I would have thought it would have bursted after Trout hit FA, not Harper/Machado.

I agree I don’t think it’s right but after seeing what the owners make I don’t blame the players.
If a team is willing to pay that much they are making 3-4 times that off of the player.
