2018 Offseason And Targets

BABIP will fall some but he's probably going to have an above average BABIP with his skill set. He's probably a 2.5 WAR - 3 WAR guy. That's got value.

I also like Ender better, I just wish we could have found a way to use both. Mallex is fun to watch.

I had to look it up. Mallex had the 4th highest BABIP (.366) in Baseball last year. No way his hit tool can sustain that. Remember Chris Johnson?

Here is an interesting note. The Rays had players with the 4th, 10th and 11th highest BABIP last year. None of those guys would be considered great hitters. Rays may take a big step back this year.

Time will tell. Him being a flawed his whole career and being on the wrong side of 30 makes a steep decline fairly predictable. The medical stuff sounds like an attempt to push off his decline off on something.

To be fair, health/medical issues and decline generally coincide. So even if he is done, his diabetes could be a direct cause of his declining skill set.

It has more to do with speed than it does his hit tool. He had a .347 BABIP the year before. I agree that it won't stay that high, but he will likely be able to maintain an above-average BABIP.

That, combined with his speed and defense, is a valuable player.

Yeah, Mallex's speed should let him sustain a higher than average BABIP. Not as high as last year but still good enough.

I was looking at CF stats and saw something that surprised me. Mallex Smith put up a 3.4 WAR last year. I hated trading him.

I questioned trading Mallex at the time for yet another risky arm. I wasn’t so much against trading him as I was against trading him at that time for that particular risky asset.

First week of ST. Were in middle of March. So some hitters should be sharper closer to opening day. Nonetheless a good test.

No radar gun showing on the Tv broadcast, but the commentator mentioned one pitch at 95.

Wright’s stuff will likely result in lots of grounders, and Betts snuck one through for a hit. Wright then seemed to struggle with location a bit from the stretch and left a few pitches up and got nailed.

Michael Bourn in his prime put up consecutive seasons with BABIPs of .366, .329, .369 and .349. I don't think that .347 was a fluke for Mallex.

Tough first inning for Wright, but settled in after.

4 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 1 walk, 5 K's. Pretty good vs the Sox studs.

Anyone waiting for Dufail to get better is in for a very long wait. I hope we can somehow upgrade him. Riley is clearly not the guy. This seems like a big failure on the front offices part.

I probably would have been better with the trade for a better return. Ender made Mallex expendable and while I loved watching Mallex play, I understood trading him.

Trading him for Gohara wasn't what I wanted to see. I felt we got fleeced.

Gohara was a perfectly acceptable return for Mallex. We all saw why the Braves wanted him.

My issue is that Mallex could have been stuck in AAA for a while and didn’t need to be traded for yet another risky arm.

Meh. Mallex was a major league ready position player with the upside of Michael Bourn and likely to be a solid starter. Gohara had a big arm but the conditioning issues made him significantly riskier than even your normal risky young pitchers.

It might just be I'm more risk averse but I don't do deals like that if I'm a GM.
