Around The Majors 2019

This is why I hate the idea of robot umps. Framing is a skill that has been taught and used for decades. And now (thanks in part to FG) it's a quantifiable skill. Robot umps would make this skill obsolete and this bothers me tremendously.

Another aspect to consider might be the changes to the catching position that result from not having to present the pitch to the umpire.

For example, with nobody on base, does the catcher even need to catch the ball...or be there at all?

I'm less bothered by the thought that balls and strikes would be accurate.

I mean over the course of a game, how often is the call wrong? May be some games are worse than others, but I'd be willing to bet the percentages are pretty low from game to game. Personally, I would rather not lose the human aspect of balls and strikes, as well as seeing an entire skill set go by the wayside.

Ah - Dansby is starting tonight. I really wish he was resting his wrist... just to be safe.

Ender, JD, Freeman, Young King, Markakis, Albies, Mac, Swanson, GOAT

Lots to look forward to in this game. Can Ozzie and Dansby keep it going, can Donaldson and Acuna start to take off, can Fried provide us with a quality start. Even after the sweep in Philly, I'm starting to become far more optimistic about this team, especially with Gausman, Folty, and Soroka coming back at some point in the next few weeks.

Yup, and even with all of the frustration surrounding the offseason, it's proven that AA will push resources and funds to add at the deadline if he truly feels it's needed.

Kinda feel like Ozzie and Dansby have been going. Am I off there?

This is out of my ass, but if the difference between the best and worst pitch framers works out to be something like five calls a game, then maybe umps miss 10+ per game?

BR did a top 50 prospects list, Pache/Riley/Touki/Wright/Anderson were on it from the Braves.

which is why the pitch framing statistics have a certain amount of volatility and take a while to stabilize and tell an accurate story...in one of the games McCann caught in Philadelphia there were a couple pitches clearly in the strike zone that the umpire called balls...when that happens it hurts McCann's framing stats even though it was simply a case of the ump missing those calls

Never even thought of that. But it’s true. If there wasn’t an umpire behind the catcher, the catcher could be placed in the field with no one on base. Would greatly reduce the speed of the game as the pitcher would need a new ball after each pitch, but would make for some great strategy.

I need to google this guy. I didn’t see any of it.

He apparently has had several instances over the years of showing up players, but this one was even more over the top even those. MLB has to make a statement and suspend him. Pretty egregious behavior from an umpire.
