Local paper quotes his high school coach in recounting the rise of his draft prospects:
Makes me think the extent to which he was “unknown” is overplayed by the publications simply because he wasn’t on their radar quickly enough. And selecting him in the fifth round makes sense if the Braves thought he was entering the range where Philadelphia might take him.
I think that kind of thing is why Bridges is no longer in Atlanta. I don't think it was for making a bad call on a draft pick. Think it was probably his management responsibilities.

Of the two recent bats, I’m more interested in signing Backstrom; but they are certainly pursuing upside HS players pretty unrelentingly today.
Marlins skipped their pick for this round?
Yea, I think that’s reasonable. I’m hoping the first three guys are underslot enough, and the 3-10 guys are mostly at or slightly over slot, that there is enough dry powder for Grissom and a couple other guys to be persuaded with an extra $100-200k.
If they made him their first pick today then seems like a good bet they know his number and have the money.

Thanks for posting this.
I'm glad to see more indication that he has big tools.
Key will be how much they can save to push past Round 10. Philip is the first guy to come to mind for someone going well below slot, but maybe they already have verbal agreements in place with other guys. Looking at Rounds 6 through 10, I think a couple of those guys may come in under slot as well, but there isn't a whole lot of money there. I'm a little surprised that they tried to get any value out of the pick at #60 and instead just go for the best college senior and try to save $750,000 or so.

That’s logical; and that’s the hope, for sure. These later round guys are probably more true fliers—but the more I read about Backstrom, the more I hope he’s high on the priority list.
