2019 MLB Draft Thread

Local paper quotes his high school coach in recounting the rise of his draft prospects:

Makes me think the extent to which he was “unknown” is overplayed by the publications simply because he wasn’t on their radar quickly enough. And selecting him in the fifth round makes sense if the Braves thought he was entering the range where Philadelphia might take him.

Thanks for posting this.

I'm glad to see more indication that he has big tools.

If Atlanta goes out and signs these Day 3 guys, this will be quite the interesting draft. Gonna go out on a limb and say purposely giving up the pool money for pick 60 doesn’t factor into this plan.

I think that kind of thing is why Bridges is no longer in Atlanta. I don't think it was for making a bad call on a draft pick. Think it was probably his management responsibilities.

There's a number assigned to each possible draft pick someone just had the wrong number. I don't think it necessarily falls on Bridges, but someone down the line who was too much in a hurry and sent in the wrong number.

Of the two recent bats, I’m more interested in signing Backstrom; but they are certainly pursuing upside HS players pretty unrelentingly today.

Curious to see who is most aggressively pursued. My guess is there will be a pile of money and it's going to be first come/first served. We tried the same approach when looking for a 1B for the big league club a few years back. This time, I hope we end up with David Ortiz and not Robert Fick.

Yea, I think that’s reasonable. I’m hoping the first three guys are underslot enough, and the 3-10 guys are mostly at or slightly over slot, that there is enough dry powder for Grissom and a couple other guys to be persuaded with an extra $100-200k.

If they made him their first pick today then seems like a good bet they know his number and have the money.

Looking at rounds 11-19, we had a fairly distinctive strategy. We took 6 HS players in those rounds. The Rangers were tied with us. Next were the Red Sox with 5 and the Blue Jays with 4. No other team took more than 3 HS players in those rounds. Seven teams took zero HS players in those rounds.

That’s logical; and that’s the hope, for sure. These later round guys are probably more true fliers—but the more I read about Backstrom, the more I hope he’s high on the priority list.

Key will be how much they can save to push past Round 10. Philip is the first guy to come to mind for someone going well below slot, but maybe they already have verbal agreements in place with other guys. Looking at Rounds 6 through 10, I think a couple of those guys may come in under slot as well, but there isn't a whole lot of money there. I'm a little surprised that they tried to get any value out of the pick at #60 and instead just go for the best college senior and try to save $750,000 or so.

I bet the TAMU reliever goes slot or under as well.

I’d imagine the order isn’t entirely random, but I definitely am most intrigued by Backstrom and Morton and hope they sign.

Peyton Williams had pretty good numbers at Catawba College, it seems. Just turned 21. School’s website reports he “has interest in adminstration of justice.”

Agreed man... I’m wondering how Backstrom slipped through the cracks just based on raw upside. There are a few possible big time gets that I wasn’t expecting. If we can get a number of these raw high schoolers to sign it will really help stock up some of the lower levels again.
