Tim Hudson signs with Giants

I think we're forgetting just how good Brandon Beachy was before he got hurt.

Better than Minor, Medlen, Teheran. He looked every bit like a horse. Dominant K/9. Competitive as hell. Smart as hell. Learning to be more efficient with his pitch count.

If the second surgery really was to clean up a bone spur as we've heard, I expect him to be not just good, but excellent.

You are much higher on Beachy than I am. I thought he did very well, but unless he can get a third pitch, I don't think he's ever going to be efficient.

I think Beachy's a stud. My only question about him is his health. I don't think he's a huge risk because of the success rate of TJ but obviously there is some concern. I think he's our best pitcher if healthy. As far as developing a 3rd pitch goes I'm not sure if we're watching the same guy. I love his arsenal.

Love watching him pitch. Guy throws a ton of strikes.
 
The stock cliché has always been "sample size." Exception is when a Braves starter has a good half season, like Jurrjens or Beachy. Then, he's a star.

I use stats to confirm or double check what my eyes tell me, not the other way around. No, he didn't do it long, but his velocity was all the way back when he came back. Then the slider and change started snapping and dropping. Then his elbow puffed up.

If it was the bone chip, I'm pushing a bunch of chips on the Beachy square.
 
Don't let my earlier comments cloud the issue. I like Beachy. I just don't know if he's a TOR guy and some seem to think he is.

My concern is that (pre-injury), he would cruise along in games and all of a sudden come to an inning where he couldn't put people away. I think his fastball is on the straight side, but there's no question he throws it for strikes. There's just not enough post-injury work to base an opinion upon. We'll see where he is in the spring. I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm not ready to count on him. I think another veteran on the staff is in order.

It doesnt seem too serious and he should be fine by ST but can you count on an all homegrown rotation?

I think we need one veteran, either by trade or FA.

Or trade for a younger guy with potential, like Porcello....

I'd be in favor of acquiring a starter who would be a clear upgrade, but I'm not so sure we should pay the price. Porcello, as one for instance, isn't a clear upgrade. I'd prefer to go with the horses we already have in the barn.

If we wound up with somebody going down and the six we have aren't sufficient, I think a June/July deal would be the way to go.

Especially since its title is a word for word ripoff of Bill Simmons wildly popular/downloaded podcast. At least try to be original.
 
Honestly, I think Lohse is the absolute perfect fit. He's pitching a high level and should not cost a ton in terms of prospects. Obviously it would take more than Terdo but I would deal him in a heartbeat for Lohse. I wonder what kind of package with Terdo we would be looking at.
 
There is one disconnect about Wren trading for Lohse. Are we really going to trade for him and his contract (22M over the next two year) when we weren't willing to pay Hudson what he got from the Giants (23M over two years)? I can see a case being made for Lohse being slightly preferable to Hudson, but not to the point where we are willing to give up a significant prospect(s) in addition to a salary that is about the same as what we would have paid to keep Hudson.

$11M a year for 2 years for Lohse is much more attractive to me then 2 years at that price for Hudson.

Is Terdoslavich and a lower-level pitcher too much? I agree that signing Hudson prevents the need to trade, but I don't think Terdoslavich has a position in Atlanta right now and I do like him as a player. He's just a no-d corner OF, Freeman caddy with the Braves.

I think Joey T is going to be a pretty good player. I'm assuming we're not going to hold on to all three of Heyward, Freeman and Justin Upton. So he could have an important role on this team.

I'd rather give up one of Salcedo/Kubitza and a second-tier pitching prospect.

I didn't mean that there will be a huge difference but I'm just saying that I have much more confidence in Lohse pitching at a high level over the next two years than Hudson. Definitely not saying Hudson can't just that I'm more confident in Lohse.

I think the name is perfect considering that 95% of what comes out of Shanks mouth is pure BS.
