Gausman claimed by the Reds per Passan

Wonder if there was something going on that we don't know about -- maybe clubhouse issues with him or he was refusing to adapt/pitch the way the front office wanted? This just feels really drastic without even trying him in the pen.

I imagine it's a combination of performance and money saving since he apparently went beyond on budget last week.

Very disappointing ending for Gausman's stint in Atlanta, and I'm not sure what the club gains by letting him go for nothing other than saving a bit of cash.

I hope the Braves didn't suddenly need to shave payroll.

This was my first thought as well, since AA went over his budget. But I'm sure had he performed better these last 2 starts he would still be here.

lol.
It’s funny that they traded for him and he’s been pretty terrible this season.
The other hand is that they saw he sucked and cut ties and that’s a plus.

So....

Give Gausman away because they took on Melancon's huge contract?

Not awesome...at all.

So Julio has saved his job for another year.

Julion has quietly been very good this year. With a BB rate over 4, it's likely a good bit of smoke and mirrors, but he's absolutely been an asset this year. No one reason he shouldn't be brought back for 2020 as a 4th/5th starter.

It may be budget but as bad as he's been it's hard to know for sure. Hopefully we hear more about this.

I didn't want him to start Wednesday, so I got my wish...

I think it’s much more likely a combination of poor performance plus roster flexibility than an issue of needing to save a relatively paltry sum right now.

I doubt the Melancon move was directly responsible, but money likely factored into this decision along with his performance. I think it's pretty clear at this point that he was going to be non-tendered this off-season anyways and it's possible AA just didn't think he was one of our best 12-13 pitchers.

A 40 man roster move is forthcoming and I think it will shed a little more light on the subject. I think it will be Anderson.

They needed the roster spot. We are low on guys with options now.

They must have decided there was no way he would stay on the team next year. I think it’s likely one of Wright, Touki, Wilson Davidson or Anderson can outperform gausman.

Last year still made him worth the cost to get him.

Good point.

I hope to see Anderson soon-ish.
