2020 Trade Deadline Thread

I’m more interested in Riley’s defensive 3B abilities at this point. He seems to have made some good plays over there although I also feel like I’ve seen some lazy throws.

He seems adequate at 3b, and was surprisingly good in LF last year.

Riley simply can’t hit the baseball often enough for someone who isn’t a defensive plus at SS, CF or C. It’s really as simple as that.

If we can get Boyd cheap i think he can be a very nice addition.

Finally gave up 2 hits in the 6th on pitches that were middle-middle - one was a bomb for Cruz. The only two bad pitches he's thrown all day.

The strikeouts are still there for both Boyd and Minor, and their last starts came against contenders - Dodgers and Twins. Looks like they both just need a slight adjustment - neither one is walking a ton of guys and it looks like they're just slightly missing their spots.

If their value has dropped far enough that AA can add either or both for less than the other guys that have been linked to contenders they're probably the way to go - lowest cost to obtain and they probably have the highest upside of any of the arms that are actually "available".

I’ve been trying to tell everyone Camargo is not good for about 3 years now based on his predictive stats, and folks kept saying “he just needs consistent PAs”. Those people were wrong.

Now I’m using the same stats to show why Riley isn’t good, and folks are using 25 PA sample sizes to say “he’s coming around”. Those people are wrong.

How many times do the same people have to be wrong about the same things before they take the time to understand what’s really going on?

Not exactly similar situations.

This stretch from Riley most likely is a mirage, no doubt. However, the damage he does with a couple hot streaks far eclipses anything Camargo provides, and he at least has shown the ability to make adjustments. The chances Riley ever becomes a "star" are almost non-existent, but he can be fairly useful at times while he's still cheap. Camargo's useful window has passed and there's a pretty solid argument to be made that he doesn't belong on the roster - you have a cheaper utility guy in Hechavarria that can't hit but can handle SS if needed.

While I disagree that Riley is the answer at 3b, or will ever be the answer at 3b, I do agree that AA needs to focus resources on pitching.

Teams can win with 1-2 bad cheap players on the roster. Riley is that bad cheap player for the Braves, and they can certainly win with him at 3b since the rest of the team is so good.

I’m not saying I think Riley is the answer. Just that it’s a little early to pull the plug on such a young player. I also think AA is working with a limited budget and will probably put ALL that extra money into rotation given the dire need.

If this was a normal full season, and our rotation was doing fine...and he felt we just needed to upgrade a few positions, it would be totally different.

I always hate coming to the trade deadline. This year we have such a need for starting pitching, seeing a few teams making moves already, and yet we remain quiet.

Everything AA does is quiet. When is the last time you heard a move he did leak out before it happened? I kinda figured Ozuna was happening after JD went to MN though.

But we basically have to land 1 SP, probably 2, honestly. Current rotation after Fried is just so so bad.

Last year he added 67 bullpen arms when that was a huge need, so I would imagine we'll at least get a couple back of rotation arms.

Minor and a LHH = my guess

I think two starters and a 3B is the goal. I doubt they get anything of substance since the money pressure to move players is likely not there in most cases and the ask will be sky high for what the Braves want. I just don't think AA will be willing to part with his best pieces for rentals during a shortened season with expanded playoffs.

With reports that AA's poking around on Bundy, we can probably figure he's not one of the targets.

Not only is there nothing out there linking us to Minor or Boyd, they're not being linked to anyone else either - wonder what an AA snake sounds like when it's lying in the weeds.

We decided to have our most expensive roster on this year. I do not think AA will have much money to spend. Because of international penalties, we do not have prospect capital to burn. I see is making one move, bringing one other guy up (like Davidson) and then hoping Hamels can come back in time for the playoffs.

With the feeding frenzy that appears to be happening...I don’t see us doing much...unless a BIG trade comes up that allows us to get talent with control (which will be painful).

Everyone was reporting we were talking Shane Greene last year and we got him. Plenty of reports saying we would talk to Ozuna if JD didn’t re sign also.

Per Cory McCartney:

Was told not to expect much for #Braves ahead of Monday’s deadline. Few teams are in position to absorb money, and fewer are willing to eat it with losses amid pandemic. Remember, Atlanta had $197M drop in revenue year/year.

that would be prime stupidity from AA

Even then, a guy like Tajuan Walker wouldnt have cost much at all and his contract isnt much either. And was traded for basically nothing. It would be stupid to at least not make one SP move. Rotation is in bad shape right now.

I agree. Surely he will at the very least acquire a cheap starter that can eat innings.

The thing to consider is we only need to pick up one month of salary of whoever we acquire. Normally trade deadline is two months out.

Gabe Burns retweet:
According to a source, the Braves have expressed interest in Joe Musgrove, who’s expected to return soon from right triceps inflammation.

I brought up Musgrove a while back as a logical AA target. His control and upside remind me of Gausman.
